The Rosie/Hasselbeck kerfuffle
While I would not normally post anything having to do with a shout fest on a morning TV talk show, I think the Rosie/Elizabeth showdown this week on The View is worth another look. I have been back and forth on this one...I agree with Rosie's politics in general, but like many I would suspect, find her aggressive, dominating personality too much to take at times. Still, I respect her guts immensely...if not her ability to reign it in when necessary. I read this blog post on Rosie's website just now, and after reading it I now understand how she got so hot. In a nutshell, never at any time has she said she thought U.S. troops were terrorists. Those who wish to marginalize and trivialize her - and the likes of her - spun it that way. Read the View transcript and it is clear, crystal clear, that she was referring to U.S. policymakers and NOT the troops.

Anyway...here's the link...and mods can delete if this is a dupe.

1. With Rosie the message often gets lost behind the bombast
and this is a shame because she often has a valid point. Every MSNBC pundit show had a segment about the confrontation tonight and most were critical of Rosie (although Donald trump, no Rosie fan, called Hasselbeck the "dumbest woman on televison").

My only disagreeemnt with Rosie is over her fervent advocacy of MIHOP. Personally I cannot believe that the bush administration, which has fucked up everything it has gotten its hands on, could have pulled off something as complex as 9/11 without the whole thing turning to shit. But it's still America (for awhile yet anyway) and if thats Rosie's opinion she's entitled to it.

2. I agree
I respect her passion and willingness to mix it up, but she is not very skilled at persuasion. I think the most striking aspect of this affair is the corporate media's vigorous efforts to paint Rosie as THE representative of Liberals, Democrats and anyone opposed to the war/Bush. It find their efforts a gigantic hypocrisy. They NEVER attempt to paint ALL Conservatives with the Coulter brush like they do Liberals with the Rosie brush.

14. When I watch Rosie on The View...
...I find myself simultaneously cheering her guts and cringing when she abandons reason for emotion. But that is far less a crime than being a seemingly bright and informed woman, as I will concede Hasselbeck is, and then knowingly parroting GOP talking points even when presented with the cold, hard truths of the worst Presidency in modern U.S. history. Rosie may 'lose it' - and do so a lot - but she is - if you'll pardon the expression - nobody's bitch. Hasselbeck is the Republicans' bitch, and gleefully so.

4. Rosie meant our gov't is the terrorists.
Why is that so difficult for people to understand?

She gave $500,000 for OUR TROOPS TO GET BETTER BODY ARMOR

Do you see that fact anywhere?

I loathe the MSM. They totally suck

8. How did that detail not get shouted from the view. Good
job Rosie. You will be missed on the View. It was only because of her that I tuned in to this show. She has very worthwhile comments about impeachment.

6. Don't Shoot Me, But I Thought Both Women Were Great
The argument between O'Donnell and Hasselback turned into a perfect example of what happens when two women with opposing political viewpoints go at it: they get serious and personal.

This was completely unscripted and it was exciting TV. It helped me understand why Rosie is going and Starr Jones is gone, and why Barbara Walters was so outraged by Jones' surprise announcement she was leaving the show. Everything Walters has done in the past thirty years has been completely scripted - she's too much of a control freak to be able to be spontaneous when the script is thrown out the window on subjects that require a little more thought than, say, a new hairdo or Ferragamo's.

And Behar? She said things no other person on big network TV *dares.*

7. You really thought that Elisabeth was great
Edited on Thu May-24-07 10:10 PM by jilln
even after she used the "someone think of the children" excuse to explain why Bush didn't immediately get up and leave the room?

When she said that I lost what little interest in her I had. It was pathetic.

10. The problem isn't Rosie, it's Elizabeth. If you notice, she argues that way
with all of the other hosts when they disagree with her. It's she who pushes the discussions into the argument phase. She has to learn to make her points without yelling. She needs to be more effective in defending her points (although frankly, how you can defend that crap?).

12. Rosie lost
Badly.

Just sayin'...

She has no idea how to articulate Democratic or leftist positions. She's an incompetent debater, at best. To have your ass handed to you like that by Elizabeth Hasselback is embarrassing in the extreme.

15. Rosie wins, just by getting the topics onto national television.
You don't see discussions like this on "Meet the Press" do ya?

I like Rosie, and getting rid of her doesn't put an end to the liberal commentary. As noted, Joy Behar is pretty liberal and outspoken as well.

16. What really angered Rosie was the fact that Elisabeth wouldn't say that
she knew that Rosie wasn't calling the troops terrorists! Perhaps it was hurt feelings more than anger to begin with, but then yesterday, when Rosie brought it up again, Elisabeth still would not say "I don't believe you called the troops terrorists." She believed Elisabeth to be her friend and Elisabeth would not come to her defense when the right-wing Republicans went after her. I believe she was very hurt by this and the hurt escalated into anger and the free for all which followed.
Elisabeth is a typical right-wing air head who swallows all the talking points and spews them out at will.

17. I was doing some research on Barbara Walters and came
across an online vote at people.com - "Who won the debate?" I voted for Rosie of course. About 20 minutes later I went back to find it so I could post a note here on the DU for folks to go vote but the voting may be closed - it was just showing me results. EH won 59% to 41%.

Anyway, if someone could check it out and if it is still open it could use some DU love.

I'm actually looking forward to Rosie being gone, then I won't waste my time on that show anymore, and can concentrate on "What Not to Wear".
