U.S. must embrace morality to rebound, rising GOP star says

Returning America to prosperity doesn’t just mean a major shift in fiscal, tax, regulatory and energy policy, it also will require a return to traditional family values and organized religion, U.S. Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, told members of the Detroit Economic Club today.

“Our present crisis isn’t merely political or economic, it’s moral in nature,” Pence said. “It’s the realization that people in positions of authority have walked away from the timeless truths of honesty and integrity. We’ve got to get back to basics.”

Pence is one of about a dozen names that have surfaced as a possible presidential candidate in 2012. He’s spent the last two years as the chairman of the Republican conference committee, the third ranking position among the GOP in Congress.

But he has announced that he’s stepping down from that post next year, fueling speculation that he might be seeking higher office.

A staunch social conservative, Pence was the winner of a presidential straw poll at the Values Voter summit in September, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

3. Honey, you took the words RIGHT out of my mouth.
As Jesus said, "You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." Matthew 7:5

I just love it when JC nails it. No pun intended.

2. Pence advocating for honesty and integrity?
What's next, Al Capone telling us what a great job the IRS is doing?

Yeah, that's just what we need as we look for answers to everything from the dismantling of our manufacturing infrastructure to the crumbling of our roads — another distracting, GOP-fueled culture war.

But it's not just the tired, obvious gropes for cliched themes like "morality" that annoy me. Part of the problem, at least to me, is also that guys like Pence tend to place issues such as "morality" in some supernatural sphere far and away from the day-to-day realities of regular Americans. It never seems to translate into anything meaningful on the ground.

You want to talk morality? Then how about we talk about the morality of trying to deny extensions in unemployment benefits to millions of jobless Americans? Or the morality of, after thwarting those benefits extensions, trying to defend continued tax cuts for a handful of gazillionaires? What of the morality of siding with financiers who pay themselves big bonuses with taxpayer dough? Or the morality of doing the bidding of banks and mortgage companies that toss hard-working people into the streets to cover their own wheeling and dealing on Wall Street?

We don't need Pence's religion. We don't need his "traditional family values." We need just what he chose to downplay, a shift in the irrational and horribly skewed economic policies that are widening the gulf between rich and poor and stripping away our ability to produce anything of value. After all, where's the morality in that?
