Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland: Dems should ‘fold up’ if we lose tax cuts debate

Befuddled by his party's struggles to end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, outgoing Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio jested that the Democratic Party may as well "fold up" if it loses this battle.

"I mean, if we can't win that argument we might as well just fold up," Strickland told Sam Stein of the Huffington Post in an interview. "These people are saying we are going to insist on tax cuts for the richest people in the country and we don't care if they are paid for, and we don't think it is a problem if it contributes to the deficit, but we are not going to vote to extend unemployment benefits to working people if they aren't paid for because they contribute to the deficit.

"I mean, what is wrong with that? How can it be more clear?" he said.

13. Ted ran a great campaign....
It's just the economy wasn't recovering fast enough.

Too many people here in MY state are still struggling.

It wasn't a vote against Strickland so muchs as it was a vote against the economy.

That's the way Ohio rolls.

BTW, I would never assume the lay of the land down there in Texas...

Saying that I have no "core values" is an unfair insult
Shame on you.

The fact that the message has been so horribly distorted about the tax cuts is a failure of our party.

They need to end and I believe that they will.

And also, I like to win.

23. Winning by agreeing to be conservative is worthless.

Clinton's re-election was of no value at all.

How can you possibly say that leaving the tax cuts for the rich in place forever(we both KNOW it would never just be two years)doesn't matter?

It would mean making cuts in the short-term that would never, ever be repaired in the pathetic remnants of the social welfare system, while at the same time doing nothing to create jobs.

And you've never DISPLAYED any core values in any of your posts here...other than a completely unjustified contempt for people who actually believe in social justice, workers' rights and peace.

You would have to agree that fiscal conservatism and a socially decent society can't co-exist, especially if a big war budget is also part of the picture. That would reduce progressivism to asking for nicely for volunteers to spoon out soup, which isn't progressive at all.

5. More from the article...
"I saw what CNN said after that meeting yesterday. A line saying the president said he should have been willing to work with the GOP earlier. What? After all of this you don't realize these people want to destroy you and your agenda?" he asked. "How many times do you have to be, you know, slapped in the face? Look what they did with health care.

Dems too quick to internalize that losing feeling

Greg Sargent: Dems too quick to internalize that losing feeling

<...>

I understand Strickland's frustration, but he's wrong in a crucial sense. If you judge by public opinion, then Dems were winning the argument over the Bush tax cuts, and were in fact successfully selling the idea that the high end rates should expire.

Here, for instance, is a new Gallup poll out today finding that 44 percent want to let the tax cuts expire for various categories of wealthy Americans, while only 40 percent want to keep all the tax cuts. A Marist-McClatchy poll earlier this week found that 51 percent favor extending only the tax cuts for those under $250,000 (the position of most Dems), while 45 percent favor extending them all (the GOP position).

Meanwhile, a recent NBC/WSJ poll found that the Dem position of extending only the middle class tax cuts has far more support than any other option on the table right now.

At risk of overgeneralizing, the problem isn't that Dems aren't capable of winning an argument. It's that they don't think they're capable of winning a protracted political standoff, even on an issue where the public is on their side, once Republicans start going on the attack. They seem to set their goal early on at salvaging a compromise, rather than going for the win. As a result, they tend to telegraph weakness at the outset, sending a clear message that they'll essentially give Republicans what they want as long as they can figure out a way to call it a compromise.

Dems were not losing the arguement and still aren't.

8. Obviously, from the WH point of view, this means nothing because Strickland lost his re-election bid
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 04:52 PM by T Wolf
The WH only pays attention to office holders, and then, only if they are rethugs.

What's the tipping point for the (majority of) Democrats to wake up - 99%?

Or will it take another electoral wipe-out in 2012?

Or will they just continue to see losses as an excuse to move further up the ass of the GOP?

And not in a good way.
