Genetically Modified Seeds Yielding Thousands of Suicides
The GM genocide: Thousands of Indian farmers are committing suicide after using genetically modified crops

When Prince Charles claimed thousands of Indian farmers were killing themselves after using GM crops, he was branded a scaremonger. In fact, as this chilling dispatch reveals, it's even WORSE than he feared.

The children were inconsolable. Mute with shock and fighting back tears, they huddled beside their mother as friends and neighbours prepared their father's body for cremation on a blazing bonfire built on the cracked, barren fields near their home.

As flames consumed the corpse, Ganjanan, 12, and Kalpana, 14, faced a grim future. While Shankara Mandaukar had hoped his son and daughter would have a better life under India's economic boom, they now face working as slave labour for a few pence a day. Landless and homeless, they will be the lowest of the low.

Shankara, respected farmer, loving husband and father, had taken his own life. Less than 24 hours earlier, facing the loss of his land due to debt, he drank a cupful of chemical insecticide.

11. Oh come on
How could fiddling with our food supply be anything but G-O-O-D good? And the more the means of production of food is concentrated into fewer and fewer hands, the more productive and efficient the system will be! And you're not against productivity and efficiency, are you?

Lucky for us in the U.S. this happened far, far away in some foreign country to some guy with a funny-sounding name, and the only reporting will likely happen overseas, making it that much easier for the American public to ignore. Now it's time for The News Hour on PBS (you libruls like PBS, don't you?), brought to you by the good people at ADM, Supermarket to the World!

15. Heartbreaking. I can't even imagine what it must be like.
A question though...does anyone know why all these farmers are drinking insecticide? It seems an unbelievably slow way to die. Is there some...not 'custom', but belief behind it that they're expressing?

It's hard to put into words what I mean but if it didn't have some MEANING, wouldn't they simply pick something that at least is less painful? I mean, even their villages and loved ones are forced to watch them die for lengths of time! Is there something damning in the use of the insecticide itself, like 'And here is the sign of what has killed me' or something?
