So the Bush tax cuts passed with a 51-50 vote
and should expire in a few days. Would someone explain tome why it will now take sixty votes for the Senate to pass a bill so that the first $250,000 is tax free?

When did the constitution change? Why have Democrats allowed the minority RETHUGS to fuck up the Senate.

16. And 9/11 changed everything
See, now the reconciliation process is the Worst Thing in the World, worse than cancer, terrorists, or terrorists with cancer. Combined. I'm sure you're astonished that a group of millionaires, pardon me, multi-millionaires aren't anxious to begin paying a little more of their fair share than they have been. They've gotten a cut-rate ride for 10 years and they're really accustomed to it. So, the multimillionaires who dominate Congress, along with their buddy multi-millionaires who report on their doings, have all decided together that they should continue to get their pass. The opinion of the other 297 million people in the country doesn't matter for diddly-squat. In fact, now that it comes to it, quite a number of folks seem to be sucking up social security benefits, and even though that has nothing to do with the federal deficit, maybe it's time Grandma and Grandpa Jesgettinby started paying a little more to support this society that has benefited a handful of people so wonderfully.

5. Repubs Used Reconciliation To Pass Bush's Tax Cuts
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 04:01 PM by Beetwasher
And they had to use the Sunset Clause and cook the numbers in order to use reconciliation.

These are permanent tax cuts and therefore not able to be passed through reconciliation.

7. Two reasons:
1. They were first passed as part of Rconciliation, which only requires a simple majority.

2. Today's Republicans abuse the filibuster, and are not letting anything pass on a simple majority.

17. They used reconciliation to pass the bill...
Since the middle class tax would be permanent, and would impact the deficit, they can not use reconciliation. To qualify for reconciliation they would need to create cuts to equal the impact on the deficit for every year. It simply is not possible to do that because the middle class tax cut would be permanent.

By limiting the original Bush Tax Cuts to 2012, they could pretend that there would be no impact on the deficit using fantasy economics.
