Why I'm voting 'yes'
Sen. Dick Durbin announces that he will vote in favor of the U.S. deficit commission plan
By Dick Durbin

December 2, 2010

On Friday, when President Barack Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform gathers to consider a plan to bring our national debt under control, I will be voting yes. It was not an easy decision, and I know my vote will be widely criticized, but I believe it is the right thing to do.

The simple fact is this: America needs to grow our economy and reduce our $13.8 trillion debt.

This plan is not perfect, and it is certainly not the plan I would have written. But it will help put Americans back to work and it will reduce our federal debt dramatically. If we don't act now -- if we pass this issue on to another Congress, another generation -- the tough choices we face now only get tougher.

2. Another Exercize In Futility
The one good thing about the Cat Food commission is it's created bipartisanship...people on the right and left hate it. Of course for different reasons but still on the same side on this matter with the "establishment" on the other side. It's political dynamite.

I agree with my Senator that we have a government financial structure that needs reform...and we agree on many of the same remedies. However I also see the Catfood's recommendations as a stick in the eye rather than a blueprint in fixing things. How can it project out to 2075 when our government's budgets can't even be reliably be guestimated 5 years into the future? The truth is no matter what cuts are proposed, there's going to be heavy opposition to it.

Helping the unemployed is being a "wastrel"? What a complete fucking tool. Hard choices my ass. What exactly are the hard choices the top 2% are having to make in all this? Which caviar to buy?

and tear apart Social Security and Medicare is a traitor in my book. I really could care less about his otherwise stellar record. What an effin joke.

14. Considering that we could easily cut our debt load with a few easy, pretty painless steps, yeah
Traitor is an appropriate word.

You want to reduce the debt, here's how. Let all the Bush era tax cuts expire. Take one quarter of those savings, approx. one trillion dollars, and create a true WPA style jobs creation program. This will provide for an energized economy and increased tax revenue. End the wars and cut the military in half. And close all the tax loopholes for the wealthy and corporate elite.

No need to cut SS, Medicare, the mortgage interest deduction, etc.

Everybody knows that. On a side note I have it on good authority that horse meat is delicious.

16. That means they've now got thirteen of the fourteen needed votes,
And frankly I bet they already have that fourteenth vote in their backpocket. They're not going to get this close to their wet dream of destroying the middle class without pulling out all the stops to get the votes.

18. Um, no. 3 Republican House members + Max Baucus + Jan Schakowsky + Andy Stern are all confirmed no
votes, with 2 other possible no votes. That puts the set of possible outcomes at 10-12.

22. Yesterday, the number was at 13
<http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/12/nail-in-the-coffin-stern-to-vote-no-on-deficit-commission.html>

Do you honestly think that Bowles/Simpson can't arm twist one more yes vote? If so, you're being naive.

25. You are misreading the article. The article says yesterday the 5 no-votes were a FLOOR not a ceiling
Edited on Fri Dec-03-10 09:23 AM by BzaDem
The number was never at 13 yesterday.

As I said, there are 6 actual names that have confirmed they are voting no (3 House members, Baucus, Shakowsky, and Stern). I'm not sure why you continue to defend your number at this point when you are just going to have to retract it later today anyway.

26. Funny, how O'Donnell was disagreeing with you on Wed.
He was also stating that the commission had thirteen votes for.

But hey, hear what you want, you always do. Meanwhile the rest of us will continue to live in the reality based world.

And I don't suppose Mr. O'Donnell has acknowledged (assuming he said what he was alleged to have said) that he had it wrong.

21. What exactly does this mean?
"The commission dramatically reduces these tax earmarks and uses these funds to reduce our debt and to lower our personal income tax rates. We restructured critical deductions for health insurance, mortgage interest, charitable giving and retirement credits to make the tax code fairer and provide valuable tax relief for middle-income and working families."

I would love to know details about this "restructuring" and how exactly it provides relief for middle income and working families!

23. More tax cuts for the wealthy.
"Current income tax rates of 15 percent, 28 percent and 35 percent are reduced to 12 percent, 22 percent and 28 percent. Middle-income Americans will enjoy a much deserved tax cut."

The top gets a reduction of 7% while the middle gets 6% and the lowest 3%. What needs to be done is raise the taxes on the wealthy to at least 70% and confiscated their ill gotten wealth with huge increases in the inherit ace tax of everything over 5 million. There are only a handful of true Democrats in Congress. The rest are nothing but DINOs.

30. Durbin is and always was a deal making, not to be trusted
slippery bit of political garbage. He is too right wing for me, he's repeating all the talking points the Right Wing taught him, like a good little Illinois Brand Wimp. They make 'em out of Jello in the Land of Lincoln these days. Senators that are fragile and fear based.

But he's wrong. People still bring up Keating 5 when McCain blows his hate chunks, we'll remember Catfood Durbin, as well as we'll remember Catfood Bowles and Catfood Simpson.
