Is it possible that this country is just regressing to the mean?
Throughout human history great civilizations have come and they have gone. Name them: China has been the only place that has been consistently large and rich over the last 2500 years or so. Greece was an upstart. Egypt has faded in importance. Rome was Rome, then split with half falling into the Dark Ages while Byzantium hanging on until finally taken out by the Ottomen, who had a pretty good run themselves. The various Persian Empires. Great Britain.

All the while North America has been a backwater. No great empires, little learning, not really bothering people elsewhere.

Our little nation started in 1776ish became a large and powerful nation. There are various reasons for this, mostly the free enterprise system made us pretty rich and we liked to fight like mad.

We were not a large empire until the last 100 years or so. We acquired some overseas outpost from the Spanish. Then we had to fight to keep them in WW2. But WW2 was mostly fought by other people. People who beat the hell out of each other. Germany was burned to the ground then divided. Japan was just burned to the ground. All the while other large portions of the earth became Communist and did not recover from WW2. Remember also China also went through some of the worst conflict in human history in the 1800s - further retarding their modernization. India was a colony then socialist.

In the last 30 years or so vast portions of humankind have figured out that markets (however flawed) raised the standard of living. Private ownership of farmland is a good thing. And grow they have. We are not special anymore. And our standard of living is high - making labor expensive.

Our advantages were mostly accidental. If other people follow our advantages we are no longer special and cannot claim a premium. We don't make anything anymore because the rest of the world is just as smart, no longer hamstrung and cheaper.

Depressing, no?

4. a small note
Our little nation started in 1776ish became a large and powerful nation. There are various reasons for this, mostly the free enterprise system made us pretty rich and we liked to fight like mad.

Don't forget that little thing called slavery that allowed for the cheapest of all labor.

And the OP ignores or mistaken the fact that capitalism didn't exist back then and for the most part the U.S. practiced mercantilism during its earlier years.

10. But also don't forget out geographic isolation
That's the big reason we didn't get destroyed in WWII, no? Our geographic isolation has made it very difficult for us to be attacked directly by foreign powers; it's a reason why isolationism so long held sway here, because isolationism - frankly - worked.

12. Well, if we're going to have a global system, and
make up only 5% of the global population, and every person should have as much right as the next to have a chance, then can things not even out?

It's always a give and take. That's why anything that makes the economy grow is bad for the environment, and why anything that is good for the environment ends up bad for the economy.

If the rest of humanity is now in the game, there is only so much that can go around. I know we don't think that, which is why we just add a zero whenever we feel like it, but a finite planet does have limits. The more America has, the less other countries will have(or the other way around). The more the wealthy have, the less the poor will have. The more humans have, the less other life will have.
