Girl, 3, Found Dead After Home-Alone Fire

HOUSTON -- A 3-year-old girl was found dead after a fire broke out at her southeast Houston apartment on Thursday and no adults were home at the time, officials told KPRC Local 2. Houston firefighters responded the blaze at the four-unit building on Lynn Drive near Meridian Street at about 7:20 a.m.

The body of Dazzalena Escobedo was found in an upstairs bedroom. Her 6-year-old sister was rescued from the blaze by neighbors, officials said. "She was crying, telling us, 'My sister is stuck in the house. Go get her.' So, I ran over there, but I couldn't help her. I couldn't. I feel bad," said Joe Miranda, who tried to rescue Dazzalena.

Investigators said Dazzalena may have been trying to hide from the fire.

Officials said the girls were left alone for a few minutes by their mother's boyfriend, who was taken in for questioning by police.

"(The mother) works night shift, so from what we assume or think happened was that she was on her way home and he had to leave for work and he figured a few minutes isn't going to matter," family friend Aurelia Escobedo said.

1. Nice thing about my cats, put out plenty of food and water and they can be
left with the home to themselves for a couple of weeks.

Sad about the kid.

2. The police should have taken the children ...
they should have known better than to leave children unattended.

3. Mine were home alone a couple of weeks ago. (3rd and 1st graders) I hadn't realized it
was an early release day from school and when I got home they had been there for an hour and half by themselves. They were eating cereal out of the box and watching cartoons and seemed fine, but I felt so sick thinking about all the things that could have happened to them.

4. when I was in second grade...and on until the beginning of high school
I was home alone every weekday for about 2 hours. Both of my parents worked in jobs that prevented them from being home when I got off the schoolbus. They gave me a key to the apartment...very strict rules...and at home alone I would be. But there is no excuse for a 3 year old to be home alone...

5. My heart is so sad for that mother
she works nights when her children should be sleeping and

the person she left in charge, shirks his duty.

Raising kids is a most difficult job

Hillary is right. It takes a village

Too bad the village has so many idiots

6. Well, this sucks
"(The mother) works night shift, so from what we assume or think happened was that she was on her way home and he had to leave for work and he figured a few minutes isn't going to matter," family friend Aurelia Escobedo said.'

The boyfriend had to leave for work.

It sounds to me like a couple who had nothing but bad options to choose from.

Could the boyfriend asked a neighbor to watch the children until the mother got home? I suppose he might have. Perhaps he didn't know the neighbors well and didn't know who he could trust.

Let's face it. It sounds like both the mother and her boyfriend probably have jobs that aren't very fexible. Not the kind of job I'm fortunate enough to have, where I can simply tell my boss,"sorry, gotta leave a little early today to take the kid to the dentist".

I imagine they both have jobs where the boss says,"If you can't get your sorry ass in here when I need you don't bother coming to work".

You know, other Western first-world countries are more family friendly than the good ole' US of A.
