Deficit Plan FALLS SHORT...won't advance to Congress for a vote!

Edit for link...

WASHINGTON — A bold plan to slash the U.S. budget deficit fell short Friday of winning support needed from a presidential commission to trigger congressional action, but it was expected to help shape future budget debates.

The plan found more backing than many anticipated, from both Democrats and Republicans, and parts of it could be used in President Barack Obama's next budget, due early next year, as well as in congressional proposals and debate to follow.

A key Obama ally, liberal Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, endorsed the plan Thursday night, joining two of the Senate's most conservative Republicans.

Going into Friday, the plan had public commitments of support from a majority of the 18-member commission, but it still fell short of the 14 votes needed to officially adopt it.

2. Thank goodness for Jan Schakowsky.
The only one not considering political machinations or appeasement or anything other than serving the American people.

She was a very passionate and effective advocate for seniors, working-class citizens, and our poor.

12. "Went down in flames..." That's a perfect description of what happened.
And why was Alexi the "appointed one" anyway? Was there no other experienced and ethically qualified Democrat in the state? We freaking handed a seat to the Republicans on a golden platter by nominating such a green candidate with a banking "challenge." OFA didn't even bother to organize downstate, thinking they would get enough votes out of Cook County and look what happened. Kirk did what he had to do in Lake County and was able to pull off the victory.

As you can see I am still pissed.

I agree, we need to entice Jan to run for the seat Kirk won.

3. As this is positive news, this will not stop Paul Ryan from including 85% of these proposals
in the budget next spring. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Don't be surprised if these nasty cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Military pay and Veterans benefits show up in next year's budget. I wouldn't be surprised if Obama included some of these proposals in his budget as well.

6. Won't matter, they'll just pretend they followed the rules
Expect the yammering to start about "majority rules" and how the 14 vote threshold was just what they hoped they'd get, and didn't really mean anything. The Republicans and their big media allies will begin thumping the tub for the most punitive recommendations, claiming that it's the "considered opinion" of a "bipartisan panel" of "economic experts" and yadda, yadda, yadda. Expect an increase in the retirement age, and cuts in social security benefits for future retirees (they won't touch current retirees, but they will set up a two-tier system to pit older retirees against younger retirees).

9. I wonder if this is a good thing.
My paranoia may be working overtime, but it may have been better to have this defeated outright with an up or down vote. This commission has in fact "fundamentally changed the national debate on the deficit". It feels like stealth politics. There is widespread public opposition to this plan, but Congress critters do not need to seek cover now. The President will take up the banner, and we will be making "sacrifices" without so much as a vote on the floor.

Sabotage is often more effective than an undisguised frontal attack.

13. the scary part is the Republicans voting against it
Apparently they think they can get even more blood on their own. The sacrifices of working people and gifts to the rich in this plan were not enough. They demand even more of both.

Who'd have thought that Baucus would be on the right side and Durbin on the wrong side.

Senator Durbin, the only table you are claiming your seat on is the table where traitors to the working people of America will sit in hell.

14. That simply means "the plan will not go to Congress as a formal recommendation"
Edited on Fri Dec-03-10 11:58 AM by Better Believe It

WASHINGTON — An austere deficit-cutting plan by President Barack Obama's budget commission fell short of the necessary votes Friday for swift consideration by Congress.

But commission members said that by winning over an 11-7 majority on the panel for its blueprint, it had defied expectations. They said it showed that Washington politicians of both the Democratic and Republican parties could have an "adult conversation" about the painful choices required to avert a European-style debt crisis.

Devout Senate conservatives Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., joined with close Obama allies Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Kent Conrad, D-N.D., in support of the failed plan. Panel members said the commission's work had fundamentally changed the national debate on the deficit.

They have more than enough votes to get the proposals considered on the floor of Congress next year.

The main bi-partisan proposals will be passed by Congress next year with some relatively minor changes and "tweaking" and will have the blessing of the White House.

So Congress will adopt budget cutting proposals and tax increases for working people that "won't be as bad" as the commission plan and this will be sold to the public as a great "victory" against the "extremist" deficit cutters, the "bad cops".

President Obama will wind up signing a bi-partisan bill to cut government jobs and benefits, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other regressive measures that will balance the budget on the backs of the elderly and working people.

It's the old "bad cop, good cop" routine which has become so popular in Washington.

The "deficit cutting" bi-partisan legislation will also please Wall Street.
