Jersey Residents Enjoy Cheap Gas
http://www.click2houston.com/automotive/13388220/detail.html

TRENTON, N.J. -- Drivers in New Jersey are enjoying the nation's lowest gas prices, just in time for the holiday weekend.

AAA reported that it's the only state where the average gallon of gas costs less than $3. That's due in part to lower taxes. An American Petroleum Institute report found in March that people in New Jersey pay about 30 cents a gallon in state and federal taxes. That's the third-lowest rate in the country.

New Jersey motorists also benefit from in-state oil refineries. AAA said having them nearby helps keep industry transportation costs down.

Prices at New Jersey pumps are about 50 cents less per-gallon than states with the highest prices, which are Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and California.

And someone else pumps the gas for you -- self-service pumps are illegal in NJ.

1. When I was doing a lot of driving up and down the east coast, I'd always stop in "Joisey" for gas.NT

2. Another BS story
Now our benevolent Associated Press is telling us that "only" $2.98 a gallon is "cheap." And they're telling us we need more refineries in our backyards. And we should lower gas taxes, too. What does that lead to? More toll roads and Lexus lanes.

Not the OP's fault, but some mornings, this seemingly inocuous propaganda/claptrap from the AP really sets me to a slow boil.

3. Exactly... I think they'll jack the price of gas up
to $4 or $5 for a while so we'll appreciate how "cheap" $3+ is...

7. Or until Congress approves drilling in ANWR?
Then the price of gas will plummet (again) just before the election (again).

6. California, always on the list of expensive gas states, has refineries aplenty.
In fact, the SF Bay area, usually at the top of the gasoline pricing, has its own local refineries. So the presence of refineries alone are no guarantee of low prices. California prices are high for tangible reasons (taxes, special formula requirements) and for reasons that no independent report has been able to quantify. The latter is usually dismissed as market pricing -- the consumers will pay the price with little meaningful complaint. Is that the reason, or is that just an easy explanation? Hard to tell.

New Jersey has much lower gas taxes than other states. Saying that the low price may be attributed to a combination of that and the local refineries is probably not claptrap. There is no arguing that New Jersey has low gas prices compared to its neighbor states however. It's been that way for a very long time. Ask anyone who lives there.

5. This is why I'm trying to hold off on filling up until I go to my gig tomorrow night.
Assuming I'm driving, I'm trying to buy as little gas as possible in PA so I can fill up in NJ.

8. And, their diesel is magical
I get at least an extra 60 miles out of a tank when I fill up there.

And, I'll be living there soon with my future trophy wife. Yay!

11. I don't know anyone who tips to have gas pumped
I grew up in NJ and travel there alot. None of my family or friends -- or Haruka's -- has ever done this. My mom used to give Christmas cookies to the attendants at our local station, but that was a small-town station where everyone knew everyone.

If one of the attendants helped me put air in my tires, I would probably give them a buck or two, but for pumping gas? Nope.

10. And so we were boiled...
It's a sad state of affairs when anything under 3 bucks is considered cheap.

if moron* had any mission that needed accomplishing, it's done. he's* helped out his oil buddies big time and screwed us all the way to infinity.

the pot is set on 3 bucks right now, not quite boiling yet, but getting warm. However, we still think it's just fine and dandy. Well, folks it's far from over. expect the knob to be raised to 4 bucks easily by this summer.

boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey! boil that frog! Hey!
