Rove, Fielding pay mysterious visit to Capitol

Senior White House aide Karl Rove and White House Counsel Fred Fielding were just spotted leaving a meeting room just off the Senate floor in the Capitol. But neither gave a reason for their trip to the Hill.

Minutes later, Iraq War “Czar” Lt. Gen Douglas Lute was also spotted leaving the Capitol.

When asked what brought him down Pennsylvania Avenue, Rove remained mum, simply smiling and greeting the staffers who quickly surrounded him.

“Something big must be happening” a startled Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said as he watched Rove walk out the building.

-Daniel W. Reilly

************

Nothing good can come of this.

The comment by Arlen Specter means that this meeting had nothing to do with the White House refusal to turn over documents and allow their officials to testify. Specter is the ranking Member of the Minority on the Senate Judiciary Committee. So the purpose of the visit obviously was addressing something different.

Rove and Fielding making their way to Capitol Hill signals something serious.

Read this in conjunction with Cheney's efforts to 'clear the way' for bombing of Iran.

Given the diplomatic ultimatum that has been laid before Iran, to respond within weeks, Cheney would feel the pressure to move up a military strike since Iran could always decide to accept the diplomatic proposal. Plus, we cannnot keep the level of military assets positioned off the coast of Iran for an extended period of time.

There is very little that Rove could not discuss with members of the Senate/House at an off-Hill location. Why make a public appearance? I would surmise that the public appearance was to cement later referral to the event as evidence that Congressional leaders were indeed briefed in advance of some coming action.

Strange events usually occur for very good reasons. In this case, who knows....

1. Pelosi seemed very nervous and shaken when she spoke on the House floor
just prior to the vote yesterday. Is it possible there was more to it than her being upset over the funding?

Perhaps she knows a strike against Iran is imminent, and that she's in for the fight of her life? (Either with Bushco or the American people, who I predict will be furious if we strike Iran.)

6. Before the strikes on Afghanistan and Iraq
there was a strike on America (i.e 9/11).

I would be worried about what Cheney is cooking up to justify his strike on Iran.

8. I know a lot of people feel this way, but I believe another strike on American
soil would do more harm to the Republicans. That would be two strikes, under their watch. I don't think they could continue to sell the "safer with us in charge" spin if we got hit again.

They surely couldn't blame another strike on Clinton, although I wouldn't put it past them, but I think they know most Americans would be able to put two and two together:

9/11 + 2nd attack + Republicans in charge = NOT PROTECTING US

So I feel that's the last thing they would really want. Americans would really question their ability to protect the country at that point. And it would be too easy for the Dems to say, "all of our troops and equipment are in Iraq, the Bush Administration left us wide open and unprotected..." Although, they'd likely somehow flub that one up too.

3. al Sadr is back in Iraq so I bet they are briefing Congress on what our
next move is against him. Given that 2 carriers are in the Gulf now, I would surmise we are going to kill him and that the carriers are there for extra air support. We're going to need it because the shit is really going to hit the fan when we get him. If I'm right, God help us all.

Bush is desperate and will make a desperate move to salvage something out of Iraq. It's wrong and will only make things worse.....

4. Taking out al Sadr would turn Iraq into total chaos ... and risk the life of every soldier in Iraq
Sadr is a problem, for sure. However, to unleash the militia he commands would destroy not only the Maliki Govt, but would put the 200,000 US troops & private mercenaries in immediate peril. It is the same problem we experienced in Vietnam --there is no way to selectively bomb the enemy when they are mixed in with the civilian population.

There would be attacks on Sunnis and attacks on anyone who is not a Shiite.

I think Bush would rather attack Iran without directly attacking al Sadr first. And if that happens, Sadr will consolidate his power and step into the breach.

5. Why would Rove be over there..though? He wouldn't seem to be the one
to do secret negotiations over Iran. Bush/Cheney can have those meetings secret on their own in the dark of night with their chosen Senators and House members.

I wonder if it isn't about negotiating testimony to shut down the Gonzo probe. Maybe that Specter seemed surprised was just a ruse...to deflect folks from his own involvement?

I have no doubt that plans are being carried forward to Bomb Iran, though. I just don't think it's Rove's thing to be involved in that...but who knows.

Thanks for posting...something's up if Rove was sighted over there.

7. Possibly
But isn't it John Conyers who has an authorized subpoena with KKKarl's name on it? Maybe KKKarl and Fred went to have a desperate chat with the folks in the lower house.

9. You send Rove/Fielding 'to deliver a message' --NOT negotiate with Congress...
This was a planned publicly observed event. No other explanation for it.

Rove and Fielding could deliver the message of what is coming and then respond to any questions that they have no authority to say more or negotiate anything.

I only suspect it has to do with the upcoming Iran operation.... it could be something completely different.
