US ready to 'push back' against Russia: official
Russian limits on democracy and human rights, murders of journalists and the Kremlin's "zero-sum" approach to regional rivalries are all causing US unease, an official said Thursday.

Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried said Washington wanted to embrace Moscow as a "strong" partner, "but we push back when we must ... in defense of our values, interests and friends."

Fried's comments came a week after US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on a visit to Moscow, agreed with Russia's President Vladimir Putin to temper each nation's recent diplomatic rhetoric.

But they made no progress on resolving security disputes poisoning relations between the two powers, including a defense missile shield that the United States wants to build in eastern Europe.

3. 'Democracy' isn't that high a priority to most Russians. We assume it is. It isn't.
Order.
Economic stability.
Stable jobs.
Being paid for those jobs.

5. It isn't a high priority for Bushco either
but having willing yes men who are subservient to the market in power in Russia will facilitate looting Russia of her resources. Now this is essential to Bushco's market doctrine. Democracy hasn't meant civil, social or political rights or people freedoms in a while - democracy means freedom of the market not the people.

6. "democracy means freedom of the market not the people"......
You have it exactly! You know when you think about the issues of immigration (cheap labor),the Iraq war (military industrial complex), prescription drugs, and the general efforts of privitization of social security and what I think are starts in education and postal services.....it all can relate to the market not to the people!

7. Too many people fail to understand this
Until they do there will be little change on this planet.
