There was a gal who didn't seem quite right. She hooked up with a friend's son and was taking him for all he was worth. She kept talking marriage but never even got engaged. My bells and whistles went off too. And she was too mysterious (only gave out her first name) and her story about her past seemed "off".
I took down her license plate, wrote the DMV of her state to get her name (said she cut me off in traffic and I wanted to press charges in traffic court). So I got the name and from there, I looked up the name of the county for her last known residence. From there, I really got lucky. I went to every website for courts in that county. BINGO: She was getting a divorce from a guy in prison (and my friend's son didn't know she was married or he was paying her legal fees for the divorce). I then looked up her husband and got a website for the jail where he was imprisoned and found out why he was convicted.
Gave the package to my friend who gave it to his son. The gal initially denied everything, then broke down, and said she "didn't want to lose" the love of her life.
They broke up. My friend's son got married two weeks ago tomorrow: to his high school sweetheart.
So get creative before you pay good money for a private investigator who will likely be cruising the web like I did. Stick with public records; you'll never go wrong.
