Why Not Turn The Table On The Republicans ??? - Return The Favor, As It Were...
The reason the Bush Tax Cuts were scheduled to expire after 10 years, is that they went around the Democratic Filibuster threat in the Senate by using reconciliation.

Why can't WE use reconciliation in the Lame Duck to, for the next 10 years:

1) END the tax cuts (ALL OF THEM) for the top 2% of earners, investors and corporations.

2) EXTEND the tax cuts for the middle class.

3) EXTEND Unemployment benefits (using the tax money from the wealthy) until the economy gets back to 4 or 5 percent.

That last one might get might actually help the economy, if you could tie the tax cuts for the rich to the amount of unemployed in the country.

The rich might be "incentivized" to stop moving investments overseas, and start hiring folks right here at home.

1. That is one of the main reasons to have a really high tax rate in the rich
to force them to invest in the US to get tax write offs.

2. Because back then we wanted to get the cuts through, and now we want to keep them.
Motivation is everything.

I have been watching these dog-and-pony shows since the 60s, and you learn to recognize them.

5. We Can't Use Reconciliation Because We Shot Our Wad On HCR
Only one reconciliation bill can be passed in any given year.<8>

7. Thanks for clarifying that for us.
A lot of people aren't up on how the Congress actually operates, so they suggest things that cannot be done.

8. Reconciliation as a method of passing law
Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 08:47 PM by Reacher
is for what the name implies. It is a method of reconciling budget discrepancies resulting from the policy decisions and assumptions embraced in budget resolutions.

The problem? There is no budget right now. The cowards in congress declined to pass one before the elections so they wouldn't have to answer for it. The government is running on continuing resolutions and the rethugs are using that as an additional hammer. No resolution=government shutdown.

In addition, no budget=no reconciliation. Thems the rules.

And also what 5 said.

12. Even if reconciliation were possible,
there is not enough time in this sessoin to pull it off. The Repubs would just run out the clock. But there is always EO.
