MSNBC Eyes Scarborough as Possible Imus Replacement
Edited on Fri May-25-07 05:05 PM by RamboLiberal
MSNBC is eying former Florida Congressman Joe Scarborough as a possible replacement for its Imus in The Morning program, which it dropped last month.

While network executives emphasize that they have not made a final decision on a replacement for Imus -- who was dropped after directing a racial insult at the Rutgers University women’s basketball team -- they say Scarborough has impressed them on trial runs in the morning slot.

Scarborough currently hosts a one-hour newscast called Scarborough Country on MSNBC Mondays through Thursday. He filled in the week of May 14 in the morning slot, with a show called Morning Joe that featured lengthy live interviews with notables such as Walter Isaacson, author of a best-seller on Albert Einstein, and banter with a collection of sidekicks with diverse professional backgrounds.

“Joe was on a week ago, and he put together a team of people . And I think he really impressed people with his performance,” MSNBC general manager Dan Abrams said.

MSNBC’s morning ratings have plummeted since it dropped Imus. In March, the last full month it had Imus on the air, the network averaged a 0.4 rating and 316,000 households from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., according to Nielsen Media Research numbers. So far in May (though last Tuesday), MSNBC is averaging a 0.2 rating and 177,000 households, down 50% from its March numbers.

1. Who needs sit-coms when we have these clowns?
But who's Joe gonna pick on now that Rosie's gone?

3. If MSNBC has a brain, they will put someone there that will keep Olberman's viewers.
This has been obvious for a long time so .... I don't know ... betting on a cable channel to be smart seems like a loser - at least based on past experience.

10. Olberman... hmm
It's probably not possible, or maybe just not practical, but I'd love to turn on the radio and hear KO himself with a regular radio show.

15. True, but I was talking about who would get Scarborough's TV spot after Keith's show at night.
If Joe moves to the morning, the 9:00 pm EST/8:00 CT MSNBC spot needs to be filled. Keith is the lead-in and best rated MSNBC show. They should be trying to keep those viewers.

6. I wonder what Steph's ratings were
and how she stood up to everyone? I know they don't want to move to Jersey, but I'd love to see the comparison just because.

7. I know I won't be popular with this statement, but...
... I thought Joe did a good job in the morning slot. I actually thought he and Willie Geist were better than Steph.

8. I don't know about better than Steph.
But I didn't hate him in the morning either. I did hate that blonde in the black cocktail dress and pumps, however.

12. I thought he was good.
I love Stephanie, but her show is definitely made for radio. Joe, if anything, bent over backwards to be politically fair, and since the righties weren't giving him anything all week, he sounded almost a little left of Hillary. I liked the format too. Although I'm not sure if it was that he was so very good, or that Jim Cramer following him was so very bad. That guy almost gave me hives...he just couldn't settle down or shut up.

has low ratings.
