So, in 13 months when Obama again has to negotiate
for Unemployment Benefits, with a smaller majority in the Senate and a Reptilian-controlled House, how much of a cut in SS will he offer for his opening bid? Will Medicare still exist when he's done negotiating?

3. Well, if a 10:1 deal is considered "good", we can see where that leads.
And pretty damn quick, too.

7. I guess we'll have to give up Social Security in order to extend unemployment benefits
that are a result of the tax cuts for the wealthy. That's some good policy. :puke:

8. why didnt this come to a head before now?
reminds me of the bank bailout..ya know, give us 700 billion by friday or we'll collapse and also sign this document releasing me from all liability/accountbility

landreau said..and i cant find it..that none of the caucuses were contacted for input..this is such bs..ive been over obama since he chose not to stem the foreclosure crisis by reinstating the bankruptcy bill and then the afghanistan surge..but it still feels like a knife is twisting in my heart

9. The Republicans have already made it abundantly clear their
number one goal is to prevent Obama from being reelected, number two repeal or dismantle Obamacare and wreck SS and Medicare and all other entitlements.

10. One of the best reasons to make sure this "compromise" never sees the light of hte President's desk.
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 09:56 AM by BrklynLiberal
It is the foot in the door for the cutting of SS and probably Medicare...just to name two of the "entitlements" that repukes hate so much.
Cutting back the SS payroll deduction is already a step in the wrong direction. That would make SS appear to be more "unsustainable"..What should have been done was to eliminate the cap on the SS income. ALL income should be SS income.

Sadly, those cartoons with Obama folding before the dealer is even done are all too acccurate.

The man who so entirely out maneuvered that all he ever saw was a blur.

The only good thing about it is that it will at least keep some of the unemployed from becoming homeless, starving, or freezing to death during this cruel winter.

23. Spot on.
The payroll tax holiday is, and always has been, a Republican plan, and it will weaken Social Security with allegedly "temporary" tax decreases that will become permanent and cause the system (which is now solvent) to become insolvent.

It's a really bad idea.

30. Exactly.
Any attempt to reinstate the payroll tax will be a "tax increase," and can be used to bludgeon any Dem who proposes it. Obama is poisoning the well for generations to come. All for a 13 month extension for SOME of the unemployed.

The Catfood Commission's report is already out of the bottle, no matter they didn't get their 14.

22. The "Told Ya So" Gamble...
Supposedly in two years it will be proven beyond any question that lower taxes for the rich doesn't create jobs. Well knock me over with a feather. Seems the 7 years of no job growth isn't proof enough, Obama needs two more years to make it proof positive. The rising number of unemployed will then become his bargaining chip...and his insulation as if things stay bad he'll be able to blame this deal and say "the rushpublicans made me do it". Or so the gamble goes.

The real tragedy here is how those suffering the worst of times are now a bargaining chip against the rich. It's class warfare and being waged inside the White House.

26. Quite a gamble..
since the right will spin anything into a sign of growth and these cuts will be made permanent.. BOOK IT.

As far as class warfare is concerned, as I've seen quoted before - it's only warfare when we fight back, and we've been losing for a long time....

29. When They Scream It's Not About Class Warfare...
What else has it been since Raygun? It's been non-stop...so much so that the right wing has been able to co-opt the terms on how its defined so that if you dare to utter the term it's "sour grapes".

It's a pity and an outrage that this administration is willing to risk such a gamble, that as you aptly say, could backfire big time. It's time to call this for what it is.

Cheers...

33. Dintcha know, the reason the Bush tax cuts failed to stimulate growth
is that they just weren't large enough? Maybe if we eliminate all taxes on income over $250,000 we can get this economy going.
