Navy Secretary urges America's armed services to consume as much Gulf seafood as possible

Armed services are urged to stock kitchens with Gulf seafood

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who doubles as President Barack Obama's point man on Gulf Coast oil spill recovery, is pressing America's armed services to consume as much Gulf seafood as possible.

Navy Capt. Beci Brenton said Monday that Mabus has talked with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the secretaries of the Air Force and Army, and his staff has talked to the Defense Commissary Agency, which operates a worldwide chain of stores for military personnel, making the point "that we should be buying Gulf Coast seafood."

In a meeting Monday with Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, Mabus reaffirmed his commitment to using the tools at his disposal to help the Gulf seafood industry recover from the damage the BP oil spill has done in reality and perception. The board is gearing up for a large-scale national marketing campaign, with $30 million in BP money and millions more in federal dollars, to reassure restaurants and markets across the country that Gulf seafood is safe.

"He expressed what we wanted to hear: He is in favor of the federal government buying seafood from the Gulf," said Smith, who said he would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, "whether it's the military or prison systems or school systems."...

1. So they're spending millions to reassure people that Gulf seafood is safe.
How much are they spending to ensure that it actually IS safe? I see a massive lawsuit 20 years down the line.

5. And when the military develops cancer they can't sue.
Well, they can, but it will be drawn out for thirty years so most of the affected will be dead by the time they admit what they did. Plus, they can use them as a test subject on the effects of corexit in the food chain. Win-win for the MIC.

9. Cancer? You think it will take that long?
We dumped billions of gallons of poison into the gulf. People could die of acute toxicity before the cancer even has a chance to announce itself.

I wouldn't eat a single shrimp from the Gulf... not for a million bucks.

7. Here we go again
If anyone is old enough to remember back around 1959, we had a big cancer scare on cranberries just before Thanksgiving. No one had cranberry sauce or cranberry jelly with their turkey that Thanksgiving or Christmas. The government bought up all of the cranberries. The next summer (1960), I went to ROTC Summer Camp at Fort Knox. Everyday for dinner and supper, we had cranberries. Cranberries with hamburgers, with hot dogs, with porkchops, with spaghetti.......

10. And you wonder what the military industrial complex is all about?
It is the oil companies and their subsidiaries that pull American military strings.

13. The people who survive
in these toxic and destructive times will be the ones who eat local, learn to grow their own food and find a source of clean water. I cannot believe I am witnessing such blatant disregard for human health.

14. A cunning plan, m'lord
Disperse those toxins far and wide, filter them through the bodies of people who won't have a choice about eating poison, and we'll have a cleaner Gulf of Mexico in no time. Some of these hale and healthy military folks won't get sickened, or will survive being poisoned with few after effects. Some of them will no doubt succumb to the poison, but since they're in the military, they won't have any recourse. Some will suffer after effects that plague them the rest of their lives, but since causation in any individual case will be nearly impossible, our good friends at BP and the company that makes Corexit will be able to skate away from any responsibility for that, too.

Now, it sucks big time if you're one of the folks who will have to consume the sins of BP. Or a family member. Or a friend. Or just somebody cursed with giving a damn. But that's part of the new world order, where corporations rule and individuals are mere vectors. But think of all the wealthy people who will soon be able to pilot their yachts through the Caribbean! Don't you care about their leisure time at all, you heartless slugs? Now, get eating on that seafood!

16. Add another reason my kids don't eat school food.
They'll find a market for all that tainted & unwanted seafood among those who won't have a choice.

17. Why does he hate our soldiers?
You can bet later, when our soldiers start getting cancer and a whole host of other illnesses, the military brass will deny they ever fed it to them and leave them to suffer miserably the rest of their lives with minimal care. :banghead:
