The trumping reason why Gore won't win, even if he does run....
Edited on Fri May-25-07 06:56 PM by BlooInBloo
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-g-brant/al-gore-urges-us-to-think_b_49371.html

"I saw Al Gore interviewed by Charlie Rose last night at the 92nd Street Y in NYC. Here's what I took away from the evening (in addition to my autographed copy of his new book): Al Gore knows that We The People are going to have to think differently if we are going to get out of the mess we are in.
And he knows that this is a systemic challenge, not just the result of a few bad people who are "doing it to us" from their positions of power in Washington."

Shorter version of the article/Gore's point: Americans are stupid. To fix America's problems, Americans need to not be stupid.

Which brings us to why Gore will likely lose, if he runs: Americans are stupid.

The best President we never had. Sigh.

EDIT: God approves of this post. There can be no other explanation for this: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/014320.php

1. And I See A Much Different Message
Edited on Fri May-25-07 06:53 PM by ThomWV
One in which he sees the American people to be smart enough to know when they are being screwed, who they are being screwed by, and most importantly they are smart enough to allow themselves to be regulated into a sustainable lifestyle.

I do not think at all that the man sees us for fools.

32. I agree with your post Thom, and for the record
anyone can be brain washed by television or other means, you don't have to be stupid. A person can become adjusted to their environment to the point, they know nothing else, this is their reality, but it has nothing to do with intelligence. 70% of the American People at one time believed Saddam was behind 9/11, because the people they trusted to inform them of the news; our fourth estate press for whatever reason betrayed them with lie after lie.

35. and that's not stupid?
Some of us figured out the press systematically lied to us decades ago? While anyone can be brainwashed, since the 1960's, Americans have had to CONSENT to being brainwashed. They no longer had the excuse of ignorance.

Where would we be if every generation had to independently develop chemistry from scratch?

39. Not everyone comes to the same conclusion at the same time,
that doesn't mean the others are stupid. People from different ages form different perspectives because the informational environment it self changes. People born in the 70s or 80s will have different influences than those of us who can remember JFK being shot on live television.

When all you could do to get information was read the paper before radio was invented, you did have to think more, but this in more in line with complacency than stupidity.

If you grow up watching television to get your information, you gain a certain trust that they will ultimately tell the truth. Now you may not believe all of them will tell the truth all of the time, but you might come to believe the rest will correct the mistakes or lies.

then I realized how pointless that would be.

at any rate, Gore is heads above anyone currently running, and I find that bittersweet because as much as I respect him, I still lament the extreme paucity of choices.

10. You are wrong
If he ran, he would win. Why? Because he is now popular, a TV personality, a nice guy, someone you would like to have a beer with. He is now a rock star, baby, and he would win in a heart beat.

13. I think Gore could squeek it out again.
The man SHOULD win by a landslide but he suffers from what I call the "snooty" factor. Kerry had the same problem IMHO. I can't tell you how many moderates who dance over party lines I knew in the 2000 cycle that voted McCain then Bush because they thought Gore just thought he was better than everyone else.

IF (huge if IMHO) Gore runs again I hope he doesn't have that same problem with the middle and takes a decisive win.

15. The system in place elects charismatic candidates
It is pure luck if they also happen to be smart or reasonable candidates. Al Gore currently has both going for him. If he decided to run I am pretty sure he would walk away with it. From a marketing stand point he has all the bases covered. And that is unfortunately all the counts these days.

He is right. The problem is systemic. But its not that the people are stupid. Its that they are ignorant. There is a big difference. Stupid is for life. Ignorance is until you learn better. We can find our way out of ignorance. But with the system we have in place right now it depends on the luck of the draw on if an electable candidate is also a wise candidate.

if he had a good campaign manager I think you're right - he'd walk away with it.
But lacking that I think the opposition would mortally wound him.

because of his knowledge. fucking shithead.

but i disagree with this post. while the country is full of morons. the last 2 elections were closer than we had been in the 80s. it could easily have gone the other way.

we just need to help push it one way and one of the first things we need to do concerns education. especially history and science.

34. I remember last time Gore ran
and the media heads were un believable. See, if you repeat something enough times (spin) people begin to believe it. What was the spin then? "Gore is a liar." My friend, whom I mistakenly thought was intelligent kept repeating that spin-when I asked her what he lied about, she couldn't answer. You see, the media convinced her without evidence that Gore was a liar. * had troubles going in with his record as governor in Texas, his past indescretions (new DL issued, DUI purges, alleged drug use, military history) and his alleged insider trading deal (sitting on his company's board) at the tune of over 848,000 dollars. Our glorious, free press basically gave him a pass. You know, he didn't want to influence the kiddies because of his past-his mother-in-law lost money in that deal, so it's okay. The media was complicit as showing him as some down home, hardworking hick boy. Yet, they insulted our intelligence, and some bought into it. At every turn, I heard from the talking heads how cold, stiff Gore is and by the way, he's a liar. * is so warm and don't you just want to have a beer with him.

I want Gore to run--I'll vote for him-MEDIA BE DAMNED!!!! Oh yeah, anyone who believes it's a liberal media--"The media is as liberal as its' corporate masters allow it to be." So how many of those corporate masters do you think are liberal or support a liberal agenda? I bet-not very many!!!!

37. What I want to know is...
if he DOES run, and he IS elected, is he prepared to deal with the expected corporate sabotage of his efforts and agenda? Jimmy Carter got savaged as President because of his lack of Realpolitik - he was apparently clueless as to how powerful, and how ruthless, and how evil, his enemies were.

Is Gore prepared to take on global corporate fascism?

38. If people don't wake up and turn on the Corporate Media then there's no Point in Gore Running.
Already the Corporate Whores and the Media Pundit's (needing to make a quick buck) are all over Hillary.

They will visit every Democratic Candidate in the race with a book..snarky articles...evidence of corruptness (while ignoring all the Corrupt and Perverted in the Repug Party who have shred our constitution and brought America to the point where it is a Colony of China by flooding us with China's cheap goods and allowing China to buy and hold our Debt.

If American Dems and Independents don't WAKE UP then why should we look for any candidate to run? They will all be defeated by those who love the SPIN of the Inside DC BELTWAY CROWD and the CORPORATE WHORE MEDIA.

We might as well give up...No?
