For the 1st time I'm going to commend Mary Landreau!
I'm listening to her speaking her points during Bernie Sandrs fillabuster, aand she reminded the Senate & everyone listening that back in 2000 SHE voted for the original Bush tax cuts but there was a BIG DIFFERENCE THEN! THEY WERE PAID FOR! At that time our country was running a surplus!!! This time we'd have to BORROW IT ALL! She also is demanding that a Pub stand up next week and give their passionate reasons why cuts for the millionaires must be continued. I want it on the record just WHO it was that insisted on that!

I commend Mary because i bet many if not everybody FOGOT there was a surplus then and that's why they managed to get it passed.

3. Precisely
Congress had already spent the surplus before Clinton left office. I recall reading this in the NY Times of the day.

9. She's talking about the surpluss that was said to exist when Clinton left office.
Everyone seemed to agree there WAS a surplus.

14. everyone also agrees that the tax cuts were never paid for in any way.

4. The blue dogs are pretty solidly against this
If anybody still doubts the difference between blue dogs and new democrats, this vote will be a pretty clear example.

5. They were never paid for
that's why they couldn't make them permanent. Those tax cuts started the destruction of Clinton's surplus and shrubbos war with Iraq finished it off. I wonder if she has a bad memory or if she's just lying.

10. We've had a 30 year smoke and mirrors economy
Ever since the first vestige of trickle down was promoted by the cons, at the same time they were promoting the outsourcing of our real economy to Asia, we've been living in the fantasy of economic growth based entirely upon a credit card with ever increasing limits.

We've been living like the Fockers who have a credit card without limits and without a payment schedule, pretending we are still the richest country in the world. For a few such as Goldman and the Wall Street money people, entertainers, Hollywood, and CEOs and their boundless greed they are the richest in the world, and they don't even share in the costs of managing our country or fighting our false wars . And now we want to cut their taxes.

11. Sorry to disagree but,
I think she is grandstanding and taking advantage of a bad situation to make herself look good to people who have not been paying attention all along. She is yet another opportunist who does not stand up when it counts IMO. She was hardly blameless over the whole Katrina debacle either. No sale Mary!

13. I get tired of theater. That's all this is. It's not a real filibuster--it's
Edited on Fri Dec-10-10 02:05 PM by TwilightGardener
Senators getting themselves on record before they actually do pass the measure they're bitching about. If it DOESN'T happen that way, I will apologize and admit that I'm wrong. But I think this is blowing smoke and grandstanding while they think they have an audience for it. The only people I'd like to see speak are the Republicans, and Jim Webb, and Ben Nelson, and Joe Manchin, and Russ Feingold--all giving their defense of why the rich should get tax cuts.
