Why is the news giving heavy coverage to Elizabeth Smart & minimal coverage to the Sanders
filibuster?

The Smart verdict's impact on 99.99999999% of the american public = ZERO. ZERO. ZERO.

5. For the same reason that people watched Bristol Palin dance.
Surely you do not think that most people are all that interested in what goes on in the Senate. Those who are interested are a tiny minority. You will not change that, no matter how hard you try.

6. I think crime and war have always been the mainstay of cable news.
Not to disparage coverage of either, but they have clear cut "events" that can be covered in a more cursory way than politics and political debate, especially.

Then there's always the celebrity goings on to fill 24 hours...

10. And, a follow up aside, this makes a good case for C-SPAN. A great resource.
Live, direct and the viewers can draw their own conclusions.

13. I don't know who Elizabeth Smart is either.....
...but as far as *News* coverage is concerned.....why is PBS the ONLY news source who, on Fridays at the end of the broadcast respectfully elicits a moment of silence in respect of the ACTUAL pictures, names and ranks and place of birth of our soldiers just killed in this awful war this week?

That's REAL to me as I am sure it is even more real to the spouses and families who now have to try and go on and live their lives without their loved one...not to mention the fact of the non-US innocent human being civilians that were killed in this war as well whose names and pictures will remain faceless...therefore - out of sight - out of mind!

Fortunately it was during Shepard Smith's time, he is least likely to spin. Actually he was being pretty straightforward in the coverage, at least for the time I watched it.

But I don't have C-SPAN today for some reason, and no body else was showing him.

22. Because Sanders politics are not representative of the majority of the country
So the number who care about the Smart verdict probably out numbers the number who agree with Sanders.

29. They don't care about his views on the 'data'
hell, half probably don't even agree with his opinions of what the data shows. They care about their own finances and right now, he is the reason why they may end up with a pay cut.

Like it or not, while the majority of Americans may envy the rich, they do not resent them enough to bleed themselves, in order to make them bleed.

24. Filibusters, by definition, are long, drawn-out affairs.
You don't think the police incompetence, failure of public mental health care or the religious issues in the Smart case (a police officer was told she could not remove her veil due to religion while she was still a hostage of the two accused, which lead to more months of captivity and rape) affect anyone?

28. Difference was we weren't in the middle of a Constitutional Crisis,
Republicans weren't holding poor people hostage and the corporations weren't actively raping and pillaging our country during the daylight hours.
