I remember a Memorial Day 39 years ago from about a click south of the DMZ

About a click and a half North of KheSahn and almost a click South of the DMZ. We were dug in on a hill top and one GI had a portable radio. We were crowded around it listening to the Indy 500. We were also listening to a huge "arc light" attack over the horizon in the North. Probably ten to twenty miles away. Right after the race President Johnson came on to give his memorial Day address. In that address he stated flat out the bombing of North Vietnam had been halted. As he was saying those words and the "arc lights" were lighting up the sky and the distant rumbling like thunder I came to the realization that the US Government could not be trusted. I must have been a quite Naive kid as this came as a blow to me but it is a major reason I am typing on these boards today. It was a day of awakening and I long for the days of innocence before that day. This is what Memorial Day is memorable for to me... I often think of friends and acquaintances I knew who did not make it back from the Nam. I don't need any special day for that...Those memories come far to often..

Viet Nam is an ugly chapter in our country's history, and how unutterably sad we are now enmeshed in yet another ugly chapter--totally built on this administration's lies.
