Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End was outstanding.

I meant to post this in the Lounge, but maybe for the GD crowd, it's useful to point out the political content of the movie.

The villain, Lord Beckett, is the agent of the East India Company, who has seized total power over the sea by capturing Davy Jones' heart. He is using this power to try to destroy all the pirates.

I think the East India Company is a stand-in for the bush cabal. They suspend civil liberties, including right of assembly, habeas corpus and right to an attorney (as described by a soldier reading the proclamation during the mass executions of pirates and their families).

It's an action/fantasy movie, but it definitely seemed to me to be making a subtle political statement. I'd give it an 8.5 on a scale of 10. Far better than installment two I thought. I also did not find the plot to be the least bit confusing.

2. The trailer looks great, but I've not seen the other Pirates of the Caribbean movies
...so should I rent those first then see this latest or just get them all on DVD when they come out as a set

4. I'd rent the others first.
they set the stage for this one.

It stands alone pretty well I imagine, but the premise rests on what happens previously, especially in installment two.

5. I saw it Friday. It was excellent.
I too noticed the suspension of rights in the name of safety and freedom as a shot toward what is going on in society today.

They say this was the last one but they have certainly left the door open for a fourth, I hope they do it.

6. I saw it today
I agree that you have to watch the other two first. The suspension of rights was obviously a reference to our current state of affairs.

And Elizabeth! You go, girl!

Good flick. You can never have enough Capt. Jack, IMO.

13. Read the original SHREK book by William Steig.
He was a cartoonist for the New Yorker, and wrote SHREK when he was eighty-three.

10. While I agree that politically, it was on our side, I feel that the politics,
as well as nearly every other aspect of the movie, were handled so ineptly as to be totally worthless.

The movie was a huge missed opportunity. With some decent writers and a moderate sense of restraint, it really could have been the subversive left-wing blockbuster of the decade. As it is, it's all the more heartbreaking to see the nobility of what they were attempting in light of how miserably they failed.

12. Politics aside, the movie was disjointed...
the script had too many holes and missed explanations, probably due to too much editing.

It was certainly entertaining, but outstanding it was not.
