Does anyone know just how the phrase "Supporting The Troops" came to mean

Does anyone know just how the phrase "Supporting The Troops" came to mean

keeping the war going?

I remember when the Viet Nam War ended, the returning troops were not treated too well. After a while, the various veterans groups started asking for more respect for what they had done. That's what I think of when I think of "Supporting The Troops," showing them respect and giving them support. I don't know how it came to equate with war mongering.

That's what I'll be thinking about on Memorial Day.

Maybe that's what its means - Keep the Troops Employed.

My company laid off ANOTHER 20% of our workforce last week. That's two, 20% reductions in less than a year.
