I have a question for hybrid owners
I went and test drove both the regular Civic and the Civic Hybrid yesterday. I noticed that the hybrid, when the engine shuts off, it pulls forward (driving in CA traffic, that would get on my nerves pretty quickly). It wasn't nearly as noticeable on the Prius as it is on the Civic. So my question is, if you have a hybrid, do you get used to that after a while?

1. I have a 2003 civic Hybrid and really don't notice it much anymore
you just have to get use to the oilpump still running and realize that it only shuts off if your running economy and without AC. I love mine and regularly get 45 to 47 miles a gallon. I have 92000 miles on mine and they had a recall for something minor otherwise no problems. I know the Prius gets better mileage but I like the style of the civic much better. This car is a 10 for me and the wife we love it.

6. Yeah, I figured that I could get used to that.
One of the reasons I'd love to get a hybrid is because I'm a courier so I spend a hell of a lot of time out on the road. My gas bills have been unbelievable lately. I'd sleep easier at night knowing that I'm not using gas when I'm stuck in traffic, it's good to know that that problem disappears after a while.

5. I noticed it during the test drive yesterday.
But then again, it was only a 10 min. test drive. I didn't get the chance to take it out on a freeway.

4. In the Prius it's less of a "bump" than an automatic transmission...

Instead of the gearshifts you have that. You get used to it, the "bumps" just come at different times than with an automatic (and aren't nearly as jolting.) After a while, if you drive an automatic instead of the Prius, you catch yourself wondering how people can deal with that much of a jolt all the time.

7. I've had a Prius for 2 years - - I have to get used to non-hybrids now when I drive them
The thing I love the most about my Prius is knowing that it's emissions are 90% cleaner than a car powered by gasoline only.

10. Last 750 miles I got 53+ mpg ... the current (about 600 miles)
Edited on Mon May-28-07 12:33 AM by salin
have been getting 55+. It does better on MPG when warmer. I fill at about a half tank - and have started not to reset the monitor of MPG after each fill up to get a better sense of how I am doing over time. I get better mileage this year, than I did a year ago - when the car was new, probably because I have adjusted to driving it - and drive a bit more relaxed than I was driving around Detroit (and in the SF Bay area - but that was more relaxed than Detroit area... so I think my lead foot had already started to ease up from living in California... fast traffic - but not 20 miles an hour over the speed limit even in fog and ice fast as was the case in Michigan.)

on edit for clarity - this is in a 2006 Prius.

11. Between 46 and 52 mpg, I commute on the freeway and surface streets in LA
You're not supposed to drive them on empty, but I was able to drive mine on empty for four days last week (which was about 15 miles) - - because I literally didn't have time to go to the gas station.

8. I have a 2003 Civic Hybrid
which I bought new. It's an automatic and does not pull forward. It took a short time to get used to the engine shutting off, but not long. I love mine and have driven from Seattle, WA to Arcata, CA on just a little more than one gas tank full.

12. For what it's worth, my Ford Escape Hybrid doesn't do that.
The only weird thing is that once in a great while with the engine off and braking to a stop at a stop sign, the engine turns back on. It's happened a couple of times this year and surprised me since I had to brake a little harder than the glide I was doing.
