Poll question: Should businesses be allowed to exclude heterosexuals?
Edited on Mon May-28-07 12:28 PM by Fridays Child
Forkboy has posted an article about a pub in Australia that's won the right to bar heterosexuals. What do you think?

1. I think they should be allowed to bar bigots.
I know thats a oxymoron to my beliefs, but hey no one is perfect.

2. I can see why they'd bar straight guys who were there to goof
on the "queers" and who tend to get lickered up and turned into gay bashers. However, those guys should be pretty easy to spot and eject, along with any pathetic women they're dragging along to prove their masculinity. No bar of any type has ever been chastised for ejecting people who lose their manners.

A lot of my fun memories are in gay bars I went to as guests of regulars. I sat in the public part and wisecracked and drank a couple of beers without fear of being hit on by nauseating men in quiana shirts open to the waist with fake gold chains pinching the hair on their chests. I behaved myself and didn't express an inquisitiveness about the back room and never commented when somebody in the crowd disappeared back there for a bit.

I'd hate to see that ruined now because some folks can't behave themselves.

3. Other: it's none of their business.
This is just a civilian version of "don't ask, don't tell", which is also a stupid and cowardly policy.

4. Interesting take on it. I can see that there could be a safety issue, though.

It has to be terrible to always feel in danger of being the victim of a hate crime.

5. My initial instinct is "No"
And my response to the safety issue in the other thread is that disruptive people should be tossed but classes of people should not be banned.

On the other hand, I've never been bothered at the fact that nightclubs and Las Vegas pool parties have been able to close the door to men but let women in. There is something to be said for letting in the 'proper mix' of party-appropriate people.

On the other hand, one of the bars at my grad school had a posted policy banning the wearing of FUBU and a list of other stereotypically black styles - the obvious racial discrimination was deplored.

So I find it a difficult question - I hate discrimination in general, but at the same time a lot of establishments have a character that is based on the clientele. Should a country bar ahve to let in all the city slickers who arrive? Can a historically black blues club limit the number of whites? Could a Chippendales let in straight women but keep out gay men?

It's a pretty broad gray area; I suppose my final answer is no - sex-, race-, gender-, identity-, orientation- based discrimination should all be banned...
