On Cindy - something about that 22% does not add up to the DU I know
Edited on Mon May-28-07 08:22 PM by RiverStone
Something's not adding up --- as I write this 84 (22%) out of 386 votes cast agree that Cindy is an "attention whore."

In this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=986803&mesg_id=986803

With all due respect, Cindy may have gone a little far in dissing the entire DEM party - but I can't fathom how so many DUers would agree with calling this Gold Star mom and peace activist a "whore." Makes me wonder just how many trolls are hiding out on DU???

I share Cindy's rage at the spineless actions of many DEMS on The Hill who continued to give Shrub another blank check. For now, I'm NOT going to leave the DEM party after 30 dedicated years because I still see the DEMS as a greater part of the solution, then the problem. Yet if we see a repeat of the same sell-out behavior in September, I sadly may reconsider and seek a true progressive party that walks real talk on ending the Iraq disaster.

That being said, I understand disagreeing with Cindy's rhetoric, but 22% see it fit to call her a whore? I fully respect the right to free speech and to you folks in the 22% --- that includes you. It just does not seem to reflect the DU I've gotten to know over the past year. Of course, that's just one person's spin on the personality of this wonderful place.

Any chance we are being fucked with?

ANSWER: Tough question in cyberspace - and I'm clueless how to answer it accurately...

15. This all started some time ago, and I swear it seemed like it was an overnight change
I'm not kidding. I've been reading and posting here daily for a long time. I've been a member of other forums for an equally long time. I've never seen the like of the change that took place here, and I do mean overnight.

I haven't the slightest idea how else this could be done. It's been pervasive ever since that moment several weeks ago (probably more like months).

I have an idea- let's restrict what forums bring up the post count so trolls can't use the lounge to get 1000+ posts and then post "concern" and be taken seriously. I just don't know what else to do to address the issue.

Of late, all the newer posters seem to be really conservative . I don't know if they are Freepers or just very reluctant Dems. I am guessing a small portion of the "backwash" Colbert talked about is reluctantly leaving the Repuke party, but dislikes the general "pinkoness" of Sheehan etc.

7. I Think The Respondents Viewed The Poll Under Different Terms.
The poll itself was so pathetic in its black and white slanted premise, that I think DU'ers chose to make their own terms in responding such as "I 100% stand behind Cindy" or "I no longer support her position". I don't think all the respondents were calling her an attention whore. I know I wasn't. I picked the latter out of mere protest for the ridiculousness of the poll itself. Course, I pretty much felt like shit afterwards when I saw her new blog post, but I've addressed that separately.

9. well, that's what happens when you push poll
considering the other choice is something to the effect of "the greatest hero who ever lived and the savior of the American People", then I am not suprised that some may have voted for the other option, even if only because they found the writing in the poll to be worthy of Faux News.

22. Ahhh --- good point on the Faux-like nature of the poll
Could be ComerPerro, that either by design or totally accidentally the poll is Faux flawed. The very nature of the goofy poll questions sure set us up (on DU) for a divisive conversation. And it worked (again by accident or on purpose) --- no clue there.

But I agree with your premise on the writing of it.

Maybe there is a lesson to be learned?

Such as, look carefully before you leap (vote) on a poll!

Edited on Mon May-28-07 08:30 PM by Marrah_G
It was a bullshit poll and people reacted to it. When you post bullshit under the guise of attempting wit you should be prepared for a certain percentage of people to pretty much say "fuck off".

Now I wonder what the response would have been if it had been a fair poll of people's views? But then again, the maker of the post did not want a fair poll of people's views, did they?

C) I support Ms Sheehan's desire to see and end to the war but dislike some tactics.
D) I do not support Ms Sheehan, but I respect her right to do what she thinks is right.
E) I do not support Ms Sheehan and think she harms the fight to the end of the war.
F) I like to Vote!

I like Cindy and I think she did a great job giving a face to the anti-war message. But she had a very strong message and she was forceful with it, and not everyone is going to be comfortable with that. We are all individuals and we are all going to respond to things differently.

17. I responded but, wrote my feelings on there as well.
I do not see her as hero or whore. I think she was a hero to many people especially in light that she kicked open the door of silence by people who did not approve of the war but, were bullied into silence. She made it okay and people took courage from her.
But, I think along the way she lost the real purpose of her mission and got sidetracked abit by some on the fringes who used her fame for their agendas.
This lost her credibility in the eyes of alot who loved her. I also said this is usually the fate of folk heroes. They begin a movement and do something to blow the establishment away and people are like, wonderful. But, because they are just average people, they get used by some who take them down a road where they lose the effectiveness and hero status and become somewhat 'kooky' in peoples eyes.
I think this is what has happened here.

But whereas it used to be one or two votes for a freeper position, now the percentage is much higher. We've always have been fucked with we're just being fucked with more now. Plus now it's primary time at DU (nearly) and ANYONE who says something critical about one dem or another is going to get some verbal mudslinging.

So I would say that 11% trolls and 11% dem candidate cronies or operatives if you wish to put it that way.

24. I agree with your sentiment, but I don't think "attention whore" = "whore"
There is a surprising element of strong dislike for Cindy, but I think if, in that poll, there was an option for "Cindy is a whore" - I think it would have gotten few, if any, votes.

"Attention whore" is slang, a slang, two word term. Its not the same as saying "whore."

I admire Cindy, and wish her well. I wish I could believe the change she wants, the change we so need in this country and the world, I wish I could believe it possible today. I believe it possible, hell, necessary to our survival as a species and even planet, at some point. But what she wants we don't yet have the power to bring about - not in the political power of the Democrats, not yet.

But I admire her. I hope to see her continue to speak out in ways that will not take such a toll on her. I'm sorry she felt she had to leave the Democratic party. And I'm thinking the results of that poll are not what they may appear to be.

If they are, then I guess 22% or so is the number of any group, past a certain point, that folds over upon itself.

29. Same slang that cooked Don Imus's sorry ass
I know Skip --- it is indeed slang. But words can hurt, just ask any woman on the Rutgers’ basketball team. So I still find the whore comment offensive - slang or not. That of course is just IMHO.

I do share your admiration for Cindy and wish for her a peace in her own heart --- after losing her son in Shrub's war, I can't imagine the grief. I wish not one more parent, brother, sister, husband, wife, daughter, son, had to know (or will know) the pain of losing a loved one. And that further will die in Shrub's reckless and immoral occupation is beyond tragic.

Edited on Mon May-28-07 10:56 PM by cynatnite
I've disagreed with Cindy on a few things, but never in my imagination would I consider calling her a name. It truly astounds me that so many here at DU feel this way. The only explanation I have for it is that freeptards have invaded to insert their vile into the discussion.

I've been around off and on for a few years. For the last few months I haven't been around much and I don't know about anyone else, but it bothers me that DU could be held responsible for driving Cindy Sheehan away from the pro-peace movement. Even at only 22% it still reflects badly on DU as a whole.
