Fear is the most powerful enemy of reason
Edited on Tue May-29-07 07:47 PM by LSK
This is the 1st sentence of of Chapter One Al Gore's new book. Then he goes on and does a great job explaining fear and how the brain reacts to it and how people exploit fear.

I see Gore on these interviews and he doesn't really go to that point. I wish he would. People need to understand how dangerous fear is and how the Repugs and Corporations are forcing it down everyones throat to get their way.

The Bush administrations use of Fear that was created on 9/11 to ram through the war with Iraq and every other thing they have done has to be repeated and understood by everyone.

1. Yes, fear is a great tool of persuasion
* stole a page from Hitler's use of power, and every damned dictator before and since. It is an effective tool, and very hard to change because it hits at the core of our survival brain, the fight or flight response. Trauma bonding is always more powerful than bonding under normal circumstances. Neural connections that are mediated by trauma, fear, and violence are the hardest to move past. Ask any survivor of a trauma or violence.

I'll have to get that book!

good post!

3. Bush uses fear the way Rembrandt used a paintbrush
He is literally a master of fear projection. It amazes me that people still keep buying into it. You'd think that after 6 years of not being killed by terrorists, the average person would wake up the the fact that they aren't really being threatened!

4. Fear is the handiest and most used tool of politicians and "leaders".
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” H.L. Mencken

5. Steve Biko
"The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed."
Speech in Cape Town, 1971

In 1977, Steve Biko was arrested and tortured to death by the police. All anti-apartheid groups were outlawed.

Biko Lyrics
Artist(Band):Peter Gabriel

September '77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

When I try and sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

And the eyes of the world are
watching now
watching now

7. Try telling that to the clueless, mired in denial, David Brooks
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/5/29/93814/0811

"Without emotions like fear, the "logical" mind can’t reach conclusions. On the other hand, many of the most vicious, genocidal acts are committed by people who are emotionally numb, not passionately out of control."

As one poster over at Daily Kos on this diary put it more or less.

Does this mean in order to calculate 2 + 2 =4 we have to be terrified.

it's FEAR and LOATHING. Some of us hate and they try to make the rest of us scared.
