I am new to sewing and have a new sewing machine!
What should my first project be?

I have sewn in the past (Home Ec class in middle school). But it has been years since I have done anything other than patch some jeans or minor mending.

1. Oooh! I just bought
a new sewing machine too! It's a Kenmore #19233 (Janome makes them).

Why not make a skirt? They are easy. If you have a JoAnn's near you, Simplicity patterns will be 5/$5 next weekend.

2. Mine is a Kenmore as well!
I would have to go check the number. I think it is like a #16xxx.

I am thrilled with it. I did get to sew my daughter's Daisy Scout patches on her uniform for her!

:woohoo:

3. I won a snazzy new White
at a raffle recently ( actually husband did ) I have never had a machine that cost over 100 dollars, I have used this one and discovered that it is not forgiving to novices like me. I gave my affordable Brother user friendly machine to my daughter and long for the uncomplicatedness of the old days. Back, forward and zigzag... no decisions. To surge or not to surge.

4. Skirts or sheath type dresses
are fairly easy. You'll find a lot of enjoyment in making your own clothing.

If you like to wear a different look than everyone else and you've got a few miles on your machine Folkwear www.folkwear.com makes the coolest patterns. I use the sarouelles pattern frequently because I love the look and comfort of the loose pants. I've made the Kinsale Cloak for myself and family members and we all get so many compliments on them.

Have fun!

9. Ooooolala!
I've got the material for the Walking Skirt and need to get cracking on it. I love the look of all the Folkwear patterns.

5. Congratulations on that new sewing machine!!
To get some practice, why not make a table runner or some small baby blankets/quilts?? No babies around? Donate the blankets to charity ;)

Have fun!!

The new sewing machines are not like the ones our Moms & Grandmas used to have!!

6. My daughter and I both received Janome machines for Xmas
We both made skirts for our first project. Just pick a fabric that's easy to work with (not too silky, so it doesn't move all over the place) and you'll do fine I used a suede (from the 50% off table), which was easy to fold, pin and sew.

8. How about an apron?
They're super easy and don't really need a pattern.

10. my best teacher was quilting...
just for getting the actual sewing thing down. Cutting, piecing, and sewing all those little bits together gave me a 'feel' for my machine...sort of like driving a new car. Pattern interpretation still can be daunting for me. I tend to screw up at some point on my first go-around with a new pattern, so try to start out with less expensive fabric...get it right..and then go for the glory. Congratulations on your new machine!

11. I just bought a pattern for some separates for my daughter
I am starting small.

I need more bobbins, apparently, since my machine only came with three of them.
