NY Post: Faulty Doors Have Subway Off-Track
By TOM NAMAKO Transit Reporter
January 28, 2009

Stand clear of the not-quite-closing doors, please.

Subway cars on at least 10 different lines are causing more delays because doors are wobbling, opening too fast, and sometimes failing to close, MTA officials said this week.

The affected lines are the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Subway cars traveled about 14,000 less miles in 2008 without failing, which means passengers had to exit the subway and wait for the next train to pick them up, said Charles Seaton, spokesman for New York City Transit.

Also, the number of subway delays were up by 35 percent in 2008, MTA statistics show.

"The numbers show deteriorating on-time performance," said Gene Russianoff of the Straphanger's Campaign, "and so now there's a reason for why that's happening." .........(more)
