This may not be the correct forum to post in, but maybe someone

can direct me.

When my mother passed away 14 years we divided several boxes of coins that had been in a lock box for years.

I have some fear of teenagers (grandchildren's friends, etc) finding these coins and everyone going to the gas station to buy candy.

What is the easiest was to sell them/I don't feel I have the time or the energy to document each coin. I also have probably 30 proofsets from the 60's.

I have a friend that tells me to sell this - buy a CD and let it grow.

Nevertheless, I know what will happen to these coins if something happens to me and they will not be spent for their proper value.

Any help is appreciated.

Best of luck & I hope you have some winners there. Anything pre-1964 is likely rather valuable as the coins were still stuck of 40% silver (now they have no silver unless they are proofs).

You could sell them en masse to a dealer if you were sure that you wouldn't get rooked. Or you can sell them bit by bit yourself for a bit more money, but that takes a lot of time and effort. Or you could donate them to a charity for the tax deduction if you had an idea of value. Good luck.

In the meantime, you could put them in a safe deposit box to keep them from ending up in a vending machine.

Is the concern that, regardless of how the coins are held/kept (eg, in individual coin holders) that someone will disregard the fact that they are collectibles and spend them for face value, or that a person might not realize that they are collectible?

I casually collect coins myself, so I have similar issues, because many of mine are just loose in boxes/bags and could easily join the general population.

Of course, it's the possibility of such coins ending up in gen pop that keeps collectors sifting through their change... so it's not a horrible thing in some ways.

I bought a whole bunch of the plastic coin holders (like slipcover things) to put coins in to reduce the possibility of accidental assimilation. That might be one stop-gap measure.
