Can someone enlighten me about these "Mystery Auctions"

on ebay?

I have various ideas about them, like that they are conducted by a group (like shill bidders), but I'm not sure. Or, there's something "unstated" that's going on.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience?

2. I've never seen those before. Wouldn't it be wonderful to bid $500

for a box containing a $7,000 gift certificate for something you'd never buy in a million years? How dumb. I was going to say I was surprised ebay allowed them, but ebay does just about anything for money.
