Biden did NOT misspeak about FDR!!
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 11:40 PM by 1corona4u
Read this;

Franklin
Delano Roosevelt is the only United States president to have been elected to four terms of office. FDR transformed the presidency and placed the institution at the very center of American life. During twelve years in office, Roosevelt shepherded his nation through the two greatest American crises of the twentieth century -- the Great Depression and World War II -- and left a legacy of political freedom and domestic security to the American people.

When Roosevelt took the oath of office on March 4, 1933, America lay in the depths of the Depression. Between 12 million and 15 million Americans, about 25 percent of the work force, were unemployed. Millions of people had lost their life's savings. Many had lost their homes and lived in makeshift shacks. Many more stood in long lines for free soup and bread. Eleven thousand of America's 25,000 banks had failed. Herbert Hoover, Roosevelt's predecessor, had steered a mostly idle course through the crisis, waiting for the economy to correct itself, but the correction had not come.

Franklin Roosevelt was not the type of man who waited for events to happen. In his inaugural address, he swore to bring the nation a New Deal, and backed by a soundly Democratic Congress, he took Washington by storm. Within days of taking office, he closed the remaining banks, avoiding a run on deposits that would have finished them all. He set up a system for judging the soundness of banks and reopened the ones that were solid. He moved to put the government itself on a budget, freeing up federal dollars for relief and reform measures.

1. Here's Joe comment...
"When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened,'"

Now, I think he was just speaking in terms people could understand. He just truncated he situation, that's all.

3. Yes, corona, he prolly was.
And as he said recently, if he 'overthinks,' (my interpretation) it won't be HIM we're hearing!

So everyone'll have to get used to it!

Sweet dreams!

4. One more thing
If you go here, and watch the fireside videos, FDR, did IN FACT talk about what HAD been done to stabilize the financial situation. There are 2 videos, one titled years of crisis, and another called a historical look at the first 100... http://www.history.com/presidents/fdr/video

This is EXACTLY what Joe was talking about! Maybe he just said "the stock market", but the stock market WAS a factor.

5. Hi Corona...

I've been swamped with work lately so I'm a bit behind. Is the flap about the fact that Biden said "television" instead of "radio" and something about the stock market crash rather than just the Great Depression in general? Of course, Couric said nothing to him about it, so I think she got the point of what he was saying - that Bush has been in hiding rather than trying to reassure the American people (one of the few ways the Pres. directly influences the economy).

6. No, the supposed flap was because people said FDR
wasn't even president when the depression was going on. Clearly he was. At least towards the end. Hence, came the "new deal". It wasn't at the start of the depression,(1929) but he was in office for the continued depression. Also, FDR was the first president to be on the TV.

7. thanks - was editing my post while you were replying. Oddly enough
I think Couric got the point better than all those other gotcha folks (and I'm not a Couric fan)

8. Another 'gotcha' they were wrong about.
For the love of God, this is one of the more ridiculous things they've jumped on him for. Try listening to the MESSAGE, people (and press), instead of just looking for any teensy thing you can jump on to go 'aha!' What's aggravating, is that no one will actually look into it as you have, Corona, and the impression will remain. Oh well, this too shall pass.

I'll be so glad when this is over and Obama and Biden are in the WH.

9. Me too....I have to get my life back....
I have this big order all organized, and start working on it next week, but in the meantime, all I do is try to counter shit about Biden....Hopefully, it will not continue after they are in the WH.

13. I haven't heard a word about it.
But then again, I just got home. Was watching Hardball for a few minutes and on their scroll it said that Sarah met with world leaders, but not a word about Biden. It's like the only time they mention him is when he says something they want to label as a gaffe.
