Gay figures pull out of Biden fundraiser

Two prominent gay figures, activist David Mixner and widely read blogger Andy Towle, have pulled out of a Democratic National Committee fundraiser later this month amid growing calls to confront the administration at what was supposed to be its first large scale opportunity to bring in gay cash.

"I will not attend a fundraiser for the National Democratic Party in Washington next week when the current administration is responsible for these kind of actions," Mixner wrote of a motion to dismiss a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act that drew a parallel between same-sex marriage to incestuous marriage. "How will they ever take us seriously if we keep forking out money while they harm us. For now on, my money is going to battles within the community such as the fight in Maine or the March on Washington! I am so tired of being told by Democratic operatives to 'suck it up' because so many other profound issues are at stake," Mixner wrote.

Poor Joe, it's not his fault.
But for the life of me, I cannot understand why this administration doesn't do something about DOMA.

Do you guys every wonder IF it was Joe at the top of the ticket, if things would be done differently?
I find myself wondering that alot. That said - Obama has a much, much better temperment & personality to be President, and for the most part I wouldn't have it any other way. But Biden had a more liberal voting record than Obama, so it does make me wonder sometimes.

1. good questions...

I think it's a message directed at Obama, not Biden in particular.

I find it hard to know Joe's thoughts on some things these days - he has to speak for the administration. I just remember him being on Ellen and talking about being against Prop 8, but then having to be conservative about it in the VP debate with Palin. On this issue I really don't have a good sense of where he is - probably did at some point during the primaries, but I just don't rememember the details.

2. I remembering him addressing a GLBT crowd in Iowa at a rally.
He was amazing, taking time to answer all their questions.

But his message was so positive - so hopeful - he told them, look how far we have come over the last decade, and it won't be long until they have full rights. Hard to say what he would do about DOMA, but I still can't help but wonder.

3. I don't know how different things would have been
I think there are complexities to every issue that we cannot see. Obama is very strategic in everything he does - no "gut" decisions with this guy. I think it is important that the gay community continues to make noise, so that the administration realizes this issue will not go away, but the changes they want will still take time. I think Obama knows what he can and cannot get through Congress at this point and is taking incremental steps to achieve his objectives.

Meanwhile, the states have started to take on gay rights which could lay the groundwork for federal changes down the road. If Obama tried to change DOMA at the wrong time and failed, it could set things back for years, instead of moving forward.
