Chavez promises to make Cuba the top agenda item for the April 14-15 meeting. He plans to discuss the U.S. embargo of Cuba and then ``bring common positions⒠⒠ to the Summit of the Americas that President Obama will attend in Trinidad and Tobago on April 17.
Leaders of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Honduras, Bolivia, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic are expected to attend the alternative summit, as well a representative from Cuba.
Ros-Lehtinen, ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Venezuela alternative is a ``rogues⒠ summit.⒠⒠
⒠Let⒠s call a spade a spade,⒠⒠ she said today. ``This will be an enemies-of-democracy summit.⒠⒠
⒠Make no mistake,⒠⒠ she said, ``this summit will only embolden power-hungry despots who feel constrained by the wishes of their own people.⒠⒠
She said U.S. officials should ``take note of who is warming to Chavez⒠s repressive visions⒠⒠ and ``deny any concessions, trade preferences, or other U.S. benefits to those whose actions undermine U.S. interests and threaten regional stability.⒠
