Who’s Trying to Kill Evo Morales?
Millions watch CSI in its various incarnations on US television as investigators sift through crime scene evidence, follow leads, and unravel crimes. Yet it would appear that few in the international media have learned anything from this popular drama. Soon after the Bolivian government announced that the Bolivian security services had foiled a plot to assassinate President Evo Morales in the hostile province of Santa Cruz the US and European press began a lemming-like campaign to cast doubt on the official claims.

Never mind historical precedence: the well documented thousands of provocations and assassination attempts against progressive, leftist, and socialist leaders over the last sixty years. Never mind the reluctant US government revelations that US security services have been engaged in de-stabilization, provocation, and assassination in nearly every corner of the world since the onset of the Cold War. These facts carry no weight with the “free” press. Just the assassination attempts against Fidel Castro alone fill an entire book.

But even the recent attempts to destroy the Morales government are ignored as background to the official Bolivian government claims. No monopoly media account that I know of mentions the earlier attempt on Morales life last spring by ultra-right youth who were promptly released by the Santa Cruz police. None mention the slaughter of workers rallying behind Morales – an act that went unpunished - or the assassination attempt on one of his ministers last fall. None had the integrity to frame the plot in the context of the violence and bitter hatred evident in Santa Clara province. Instead, they hide behind the cowardly quotation marks – a “plot” – as did The Wall Street Journal on April 20.

Accounts agree that five individuals - mostly of foreign origin – were suspected of planting an explosive devise at the home of a Catholic Cardinal in Santa Cruz. When the authorities attempted to arrest them, they fled to a four star hotel where a gun battle ensued. Three were killed. Bolivian authorities claim that evidence of a far ranging assassination plot and a weapons cache were discovered.

Attention has focused on the suspected ring leader, a man of Hungarian and Bolivian nationality and Croatian citizenship (though his passport status is unclear) who has a history as both a soldier of fortune and a dedicated anti-Communist. His military exploits in Croatia in the Balkan wars were documented in a book that he authored and the subject of a projected film. Since his death, a Hungarian journalist has come forth with a filmed interview of his intentions to organize and fight on behalf of the Santa Cruz secessionists. Apologists, along with the kept press, have focused on his off-handed dismissal of any intention to attack Morales: “I am not going there to organize the attack of La Paz and chase away the president, that doesn’t even cross the easterners’ minds…” This quip is taken as evidence that he meant no harm to Morales, as though he would candidly express his plans to a journalist. Where is CSI when we need them? Imagine the hysteria of the US press if he were a jihadist discussing his forthcoming adventure in the US!

Much consideration – especially in the Irish press – has been given to the young Irishman who was killed in the gun battle. We know that he was employed in security work in Ireland and appeared to have some para-military training before leaving for Bolivia last year. We do not know why he chose Bolivia. Nor do we know how an unemployed 24 year old financed his travel or his stay in expensive hotels on Lake Titicaca and in Santa Cruz. But this – along with his association with his unlikely acquaintances – should pique the interests of a vigilant press, if one still exists in the monopoly-dominated universe. In the face of Northern skepticism, the Bolivian security officials on Saturday, April 25 previewed for the press a three minute video purporting to show the Croatian, the Irishman and the their Romanian companion discussing a bomb attempt on Morales at a visit to Lake Titicaca. They left Lake Titicaca on April 3 and lodged at the four star Hotel Santa Cruz until their encounter with the police on April 16.

Rather than agreeing to share information with the Bolivian security officials, Croatia, Hungary and Ireland have all called for independent investigations of the Santa Cruz incident, a hasty and blatantly chauvinistic response that challenges Bolivian competence and integrity. One searches one’s memory for an equal skepticism over the contrived US invasion of Iraq by these self-righteous governments.

While much still seems uncertain, even more should be apparent to even the most casual observer unless blinded by ideology or dependency:
● Several individuals of diverse and unlikely backgrounds came together in Bolivia and found some common cause for at least three weeks of close, organized activity.
● None appear to have the independent, financial means to justify their prolonged stay within Bolivia, especially their joint occupancy of expensive hotels for an extended period.
●All have incomplete, but confirmed histories involving para-military or security work.

These circumstantial facts alone should establish prima facie credence to the Bolivian security service’s claims.

The question remains: who could have brought these personalities together and provided the financial support to explain their activities in Bolivia?

Speculation naturally falls upon US security services, the godfather to thousands of similar provocations and intrigues. President Obama assured the Bolivians that his administration knew nothing of the plot. This statement may well be true, though we have many precedents where US agencies acted outside of White House approval or knowledge. In any case, US security services quite often are completely aware of independently formulated plans, render clandestine encouragement and support, and simply watch for the outcome – a method of passive action that insures deniability and avoids administrative scrutiny. Such was likely the case with the assassinations of General Schneider and Orlando Letelier during and after the Allende era. And this might also have been the case with the attempted coup against Hugo Chavez.

Certainly the connection between a seemingly inconsistent attack upon both an ally of the Santa Cruz secessionists – a Catholic Cardinal – and the arch proponent of Bolivian unity – President Morales – fits the pattern of previous destabilization campaigns. Even if unsuccessful, these acts would foment further friction, hostility, and chaos in Bolivia – a crisis that might encourage foreign intervention and make the disintegration of the nation more likely. Those who failed to see this process at work in the Balkan wars and the dismemberment of Yugoslavia have a chance to see it again in South America.

If a plot to assassinate the democratically elected president of Bolivia is not an act of terror, then nothing is. This incident, along with the intrigues against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, challenge those who endorse the US sponsored “War on Terror”. Sincerity dictates a call for full support for the Bolivian investigation of the assassination attempts and vocal condemnation of those involved in any way in their planning and encouragement.

as a cherubic innocent, since his family never heard him mention he was involved in killing hated indigenous leaders for the fascists in Bolivia. One article actually described him as "a dreamer." What "dreamer" involves himself in trying to murder elected leaders?

Another two men have been arrested. One, Juan Carlos Guedes Bruno, known as "Captain Bruno" was intercepted in his car and arrested. He's involved with the Cruceños Youth Union, and the Santa Cruz Civic Committee.

All I've seen so far is one name for the other one: Iverth, or Alcides, and the alias "Commander Mosén." I'll continue to look for info.

Consequently, following the latest revelations about the involvement of Croat paramilitaries in the assassination attempts of Bolivian state leadership, Croat Foreign Ministry warned it has instructed its representative in Chile, “who also covers Bolivia”, “to closely follow the situation in Bolivia and if necessary, have talks at the Bolivian Foreign Ministry”.

According to Croat media, their government also considers “sending a diplomatic note” to Bolivian state, to urge toning down of the investigation of the true character of all the “wars of liberation” Croatia lead in its short, rather nasty history.


But just in case the shit does hit the proverbial fan this time around, Croat government announced it is ready to distance itself from the mercenaries and psychos it took under its wing during the civil war in the 1990s — those who have unexpectedly found themselves under the unpleasant limelight of public attention:

Greenlee, whose history over two periods in Bolivia was hallmarked by interference, impunity and criminal activity.

Goldberg, recognized as an expert in stoking ethnic or racial conflicts and his experience in Bosnia’s ethnic struggles preceding the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, would be key in Bolivia. No-one doubted that his hand was behind the intense separatist process happening in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a propitious setting for his government’s plans, with exacerbated elements of racism and hatred against the indigenous population, and prevalent slavery that formed the basis of dictatorship and neoliberal impositions; finally defeated by the Bolivian people in recent years, through a heroic struggle.

In the past, Goldberg worked in the U.S. State Department, on Haiti, among other countries, as well as South Africa, Colombia and Paraguay. After serving as Deputy Chief of Mission in Santiago de Chile between 2001 and 2004, Goldberg went once more to the Balkans to head the Kosovo mission, where he worked until 2006 to break away Serbia and Montenegro.

When he arrived in Bolivia, the Croatian businessmen (his friends) settled in Santa Cruz, had already put together the movement “Nación Camba,” one of whose main leaders - with business ties in Chile and other countries - Branco Marinkovic, ended up leading the local Civic Committee, the foremost promoter of destabilization, with a strong influence throughout the rest of the Media Luna, where the country’s greatest natural resources are concentrated.

The ambassador did not hide his support for the businessmen who sought an unusual governmental autonomy for Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Beni, Pando and Tarija, in the country’s eastern portion. “However, regardless of who it may be and how much someone deserves credit for the defense of Croatia, the Croatian government cannot be held responsible for the things former defenders are doing at present,” said Jadranka Kosor, minister for veterans and vice president of Croat government.

As far as Bolivians are concerned, nothing will succeed in shutting the floodgates: neither the violent knee-jerk reactions and “warnings” coming from nervous Croats, nor the pressure campaign orchestrated by the Western mainstream media eager to cover up the background of the recent events and shield the key figures involved in a failed coup attempt by portraying Bolivian President Evo Morales as a kook who invented the foiled plot and smearing Bolivian government by suggesting the three hired assassins were killed in cold blood.

Marinković, whose parents fled to South America after WWII since his father Silvio supported Croat fascists (Ustasha), is accused of becoming one of Bolivia’s richest men through plunder and illegal land grabs in areas inhabited by Guarayo Indians.

According to Bolivian media, Marinković and his compatriots living in Bolivia are trying to break up that country in the same way Croat secessionists have dismembered Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Marinković is accused of seeking to foment a civil war to create a breakaway country in the lowlands, exactly like Tudjman, aided by the Ustasha emigration, Germany and Vatican, has done in former Yugoslavia.

Even though Marinković vehemently denies these allegations, the New York Times quoted his direct threats of instigating a civil war in Bolivia, unless his separatist goal is supported and aided by the “international community” (presumably the same Berlin-Washington-London “international community” that supported violent dismemberment of Yugoslavia).

“If there is no legitimate international mediation in our crisis, there is going to be confrontation. And unfortunately, it is going to be bloody and painful for all Bolivians,” Marinković growled.

Pro-Ustasha Mercenary Terrorists Recruited from Montenegro
Simon Romero, chief New York Times correspondent from Bolivia, told Croat media that Bolivian reporters are investigating rumors the Croat oligarch was bringing pro-Ustasha mercenaries from Montenegro, a legal gray zone in the Balkans, regarded a safe-haven for smugglers and all types of criminals in the region, under the protection of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, local mafia boss charged by the Italian prosecution for involvement in large scale smuggling operations since the 1990s.

On Friday, Bolivian security forces shot three and arrested two terrorists belonging to the group of neo-Nazi assassins plotting to behead Bolivian state leadership.

According to Bolivian police chief Victor Hugo Escobar, it was established the leader of the gang of terrorists planning to assassinate President Evo Morales among others, was Eduardo Rozsa Flores, a Spanish-Hungarian national who commanded the “International Brigade” within the infamous Croat paramilitary Zenga units, responsible for horrific atrocities and ethnic cleansing of Serbian population from their ancestral land in Slavonia and Serbian Krajina in Croatia during the 1990s. Flores was also accused of smuggling weapons and narcotics, as well as of killing a Swiss and British reporter who worked for the German EPA news agency and were investigating ties of the mercenaries in the Croat paramilitary troops with the Western fascist groups.

Of the two arrested terrorists, Croat Mario F. Tadic (58) also took part in Tudjman’s war against indigenous Serbian population.

Recently an anti-terrorist unit of the Bolivian police seized an arsenal in the city of Santa Cruz and arrested four people.

In this operation in October 2008 was not only guns, carbines and pistols, grenades, but also long-range, 3 thousand bullets of different caliber and communication systems. The Deputy Minister of Government (Interior), Rubén Gamarra, reported "This is a criminal organization, arms, ready to sow anxiety, fear in the population (...) with the purpose and intent of causing death and pain in the country," linked to a civilian coup against President Evo Morales 83.

Faced with this, the government has shown a remarkable restraint in not responding to violent provocations, until September in Pando, where there has been a real slaughter of peasants and the army had to intervene by declaring a state of emergency as we shall see later in this work.

The role of media disinformation

Reporters Without Borders (aka Reporters Without scruples) played his usual role uninformed not to mention the massacres, nor those who perpetrated and confusing to their unwary readers about the origins of violence.
For example, in its annual report RSF 84 states at its outset that the language of Bolivia is Spanish. False official languages are also the Castilian, Aymara and Quechua.
Then instruct us about the origins of the conflict: "The constitutional reform initiated by President Evo Morales has provoked violent reactions from the opposition movements, including in six of the nine departments, whose rulers were hostile to the government."
Apart from that it is untrue that the constitution is responsible for the violence, the maximum sentence the aspirations for independence. The departments are 6 and 4 if no reactions have occurred only in the capitals of those controlled by the warlords who want to keep their privileges.
What's more shamelessly goes on to say that the origins of violence are the growers ...
"The violence began on January 8, 2007 when producers of coca in the region of Cochabamba (Center, from which Evo Morales, who was also cocalero) demonstrated against the vagaries Autonomists governor Manfred Reyes Villa."

According to witnesses, however, police had attempted to arrest the men in downtown Santa Cruz, and they fled to a hotel, where a half-hour shootout came to an end when the alleged plotters reportedly detonated a grenade inside their hotel room.

Santa Cruz governor Rubén Costas, Morales' most prominent political opponent and one of four governors who have sought autonomy for their provinces, initially suggested that the supposed assassination plot was staged, although he is now demanding an impartial investigation. The right-wing Santa Cruz Civic Committee, led by local business leaders and landowners, is demanding to see the evidence and photos of the commando that the government says it has.

No investigation has so far clarified the months-long escalation of bomb and arson attacks that have targeted the homes of cabinet ministers, government officials and opposition leaders in Santa Cruz since Morales took office in January 2006. However, the April 15 attack on the Santa Cruz home of Roman Catholic Cardinal Julio Terrazas, which was carried out with military-style plastic explosives, caused a public outcry. Terrazas was out of town at the time of the attack, for which no one claimed responsibility.
