The Venezuelan undertaking dates back to 2007
CARACAS, Thursday June 04, 2009
President Hugo Chávez authorized a USD 70 million investment to lay an undersea fiber optic cable between Venezuela and Cuba, Venezuelan government authorities reported.
Following the nationalization of Venezuela's largest telephone company two years ago, Hugo Chávez's administration took action to lay an undersea cable in order to improve the telecommunication systems of the two countries, AP reported.
Chávez announced on Tuesday the approval by the government of "USD 70 million for the undersea cable through Cuba," according to a news release from the presidential press office.
The cable will run 966 miles and will have a capacity to handle more than 20 millions of calls at once, as well as 26,000 television signals and will provide Internet connections, as reported by local officials.
