Police charge against those in favor of Zelaya in Tegucigalpa
Police charge against those in favor of Zelaya in Tegucigalpa

Agents use tear gas to disperse crowds of followers of the demoted president of Honduras. - The temporary leader, Micheletti Robert, denies that there has been a coup d'etat

PABLO ORDAZ - Tegucigalpa - 30/06/2009

Ever since president Manuel Zelaya was detained and removed from Honduras by the military coup participants, tens of citizens had remained in front of the Presidential House, like keeping the absence to him, preventing that the new president occupied his place. The soldiers, supplied well after the grates, observed and hoped, listening unmoved shouts that called them traitors, and calls for them to desert, to join the people. But last night, that tense calm was broken. The military, helped by the antiriot police, left to charge violently against the citizens. On the streets of Tegucigalpa already the first drops of blood have fallen.

There were no deaths, although throughout the day there was a rumor that Rosel Ulises Rock, a young worker of the company of Hondutel telecommunications had died after being run over by a military truck. Ulises, of 30 years, was by the gate to the company when the soldiers went to take it over and to block further the already poor communications in the country. After some international agencies even gave him up for dead, a spokesman for the hospital denied categorically that the young wounded man had passed away. But the injury to the worker was a harbinger of bad things to come.

The adjacent streets to the Presidential House were scene of violent police actions. The unfolding objective was to clear the avenue Juan Pablo II to allow the new president, Micheletti Robert, access to his new official office. And for it, the police and the soldiers they did not lack enough tear gas, wood clubs and rubber projectiles. The ripples followed one another, because the demonstrators tried to hold their line with wooden sticks and stones, but almost never David wins against Goliath. The Red Cross had to take care of tens of injured people, some of them with open wounds in the face, but finally the avenue was opened.

2. Part of the ebb and flow of the human(e) struggle.
The most inspirational heroes of labor come from struggles like this. Sad. So unnecessary.

3. I was watching all these soldaditos get swatted today by angry people
as they ran to take their positions -- like running a gauntlet. They were children, practically.

I hope this is over soon.
