Brazil VP heading to US for cancer treatment

SAO PAULO – Doctors say that Brazil's vice president has been released from the hospital 11 days after undergoing surgery for cancer. Now he's reportedly headed to Texas for treatment.

A statement on Tuesday from Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes hospital says Jose Alencar underwent surgery to remove a partial blockage of his large intestine caused by tumors.

The 77-year-old Alencar has fought abdominal cancer since 1997. He underwent 17 hours of surgery to remove tumors in January.

The state-run Agencia Brasil says Alencar was to fly to Houston for treatment at the MD Andersen Cancer Center.
