"Democratic" censorship in Globovisión (Venezuela)
"Democratic" censorship in Globovisión
By Arturo Rosales
Feb 9, 2008, 15:10

Globovisón is the undisputed leader in Venezuelan media circles for opposing the government at every turn. In what has now become common practice in the opinion program "Aló, Cuidadano" hosted by one Leopoldo Castillo, phone calls from the TV audience who manifest their disagreement with opinions and the editorial line of this program are simply cut off. The editorial line is, in a nutshell, anti –Venezuelan, anti- Government, Anti Chávez and above all pro US Imperialism and now pro Colombia's government.

Globovisón transmits on open signal in Caracas, Valencia and Maracaibo and is available on cable both nationally and internationally. The open signal uses Venezuela's radio-electric spectrum which is state property and hence belongs to all Venezuelans. Globovisión has a concession to use this frequency and misuses it to promote discord, lies and contentiously twisted facts.

All this in the name of the sacred democratic cow called "freedom of expression", which Globovisón, dixit, defends assiduously. However, in the following video (you do not need to speak Spanish to get the point) Globovisón clearly demonstrates its respect for other people's opinions by just cutting off the phone call if the caller dares to criticize any opinion proffered by Castillo and his guests.

One caller accuses Castillo of supporting US Imperialism and is cut off. Another caller voices her opinion that it is disrespectful to try and associate President Chávez with drug smuggling. She is unceremoniously cut off.

1. Get this: I listened to Obama's stump in VA yesterday.
He referred very casually to Chavez "consolidating power" and the "freedom of the press issue". That was disappointing but not surprising. He must get his information from the Miami Herald. :)

I'm going to send his campaign this article. It's perfect!

Thanks, Judi!

2. That's so sad, isn't it? I was wondering where he stood. Sounds as if he's only glanced at corporate
crap, and has decided not to become a leader who turns on the light for people, but simply goes along with the popularly held beliefs (thanks to right-wing control of ALL U.S. sources) as it all just takes too much time and trouble helping confused, or simply ignorant people straighten it all out.

Damned rotten news.

Well, you can always hope he'll somehow develope an open mind and stay open long enough to get straightened out.

Thanks for shedding light on his position. Sure hope he starts working on developing a moral position.

3. My info is that he met with some VIO people today.
I'm not in love with Obama although he can be attractive. But, it was good to hear that he is taking the time to get better information.
