Cuban TV shows a healthier-looking Fidel Castro welcoming Venezuelan students
HAVANA August 23, 2009 (AP)

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro appeared on state television on Sunday for the first time since June 2008, meeting with a group of students from Venezuela. The broadcast showed the 83-year-old Castro looking healthier and rested and talking with the students at an undisclosed location on Saturday.

Castro has rarely been shown on Cuban TV since he fell ill three years ago. He ceded power to his brother Raul and has not been seen in public since. Castro formally stepped down as president in February 2008.

In Sunday's broadcast, Fidel Castro told the students the globe faces a grave threat posed by climate change.

"Even the Pentagon has put global warming among the things that threaten the security of the United States," he said.

The students presented Castro with a T-shirt and sang, "We love you, Fidel. We love you." Castro, wearing a blue track suit, tells the students Cuba stands by the leftist Venezuelan government of President Hugo Chavez, a close friend and ally of Castro's.

The last time Castro was shown on Cuban TV was in June 2008 — in meeting with Chavez.

1. Here's a very small collection of Fidel Castro taken after he retired from public life,
since I looked them up to answer a complete fool in LBN who attempted to drag that claim about "Dead Fidel" out again. There is a new one in here you may not have seen, taken with Zelaya, on his visit:

Photo reveals frail Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro has not been seen in public for more than two years
The first photograph of former Cuban President Fidel Castro to be seen in five months has been published on the website of the Russian Orthodox Church.

It shows the 82-year-old, leaning on the arm of a senior church official, looking frail but alert.

The church said it had been taken on 20 October, at the consecration of a new Orthodox cathedral in Havana.

New images were released Sunday of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, showing him in a brief videotape and four photographs meeting with the visiting Vietnamese Communist Party chief.

These were the first images of Castro released by the Cuban government in months.

A photo in Cuba's Juventud Rebelde newspaper shows Cuba's President Fidel Castro meeting with Vietnamese Communist Party chief Nong Duc Manh in Havana.

(Juventud Rebelde/Associated Press) The images included a video clip shown on state television, and four photographs of his two-hour meeting with Nong Duc Manh published Sunday in the Communist youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde.

Jan. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Cuban President Fidel Castro is ``impeccably healthy'' and ready to resume his role in Cuban politics, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said after meeting the former revolutionary in Havana yesterday.

The meeting with Lula lasted 2 1/2 hours and signals that the Cuban leader, 81, still wields influence in the government after he handed over daily tasks to his brother Raul, 76, in July 2006.

``Lula is giving weight to the idea that Fidel will serve as an elder statesman for Cuba,'' said Jorge Pinon, a senior researcher at the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami. ``There won't be radical changes in Cuba as long as Fidel is alive.''

Argentina Releases New Photo of Fidel Castro
By VOA News
23 January 2009

Argentina's government has released a photograph of Fidel Castro - the first picture of the former Cuban leader to be made public in two months.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, poses with Cuba's former president Fidel Castro, during meeting in Havana, 21 Jan 2009
The picture, released Friday, shows a serious Mr. Castro looking straight into the camera and standing beside Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

Ms. Fernandez visited Cuba earlier this week and met with Fidel Castro for about 30 minutes. She told reporters she thought he looked very good.

Mr. Castro has not been seen in public since undergoing intestinal surgery in July 2006.

The former long-time president wrote an Internet column recently in which he said his health was deteriorating. The 82-year-old said he will soon be unable to follow current events.

The comments were Mr. Castro's first written remarks since December 15.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.

Cuban television has shown the first images of Fidel Castro in more than five months, yesterday broadcasting a silent video of the ailing revolutionary chatting in a garden with visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

The 81-year-old Castro looked thinner, and his hair and beard appeared much whiter, in the new video. But he nevertheless looked vigorous and animated as he talked with Chavez and younger brother Raul Castro. He wore in a white track-suit jacket with red and blue trim.

Healthier-looking Castro gives TV interview - but does not mention return to powerLast updated at 14:27 06 June 2007

Comments (0) Add to My Stories Speaking slowly and focusing on past memories rather than his recovery and future, a healthier looking Fidel Castro appeared on Cuban television last night, giving the world its first long look at him since he fell ill and gave up power last summer.
The 80-year-old's now grayer beard and hair were well-trimmed and he seemed rested and alert - no longer the picture of a man on the verge of death. But he did not speak in depth about international issues and did not mention any plans to govern Cuba again.

Fidel Castro meets with Chinese official in private in sweat suit

Published: Sat April 21, 2007
By Anthony Boadle | Reuters

Convalescing Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who has not appeared in public for almost nine months, met with a high-ranking Chinese Communist Party official for an hour on Friday, Cuban state media said.

Pictures published on Saturday by Cuban newspapers showed a recovering Castro meeting with Wu Guanzheng, a member of the Standing Committee of China’s Communist Party Politburo.

One photograph published in Cuba’s Communist Party newspaper Granma showed the 80-year-old Cuban leader, who wore a track suit, sitting next to Wu as a young Chinese interpreter takes notes. Another shows them shaking hands.

The meeting with the highest-ranking Chinese official to visit Cuba in more than a year was the latest sign that Castro, who relinquished power temporarily to his brother in July after emergency stomach surgery, is resuming some government duties.

Castro, who last appeared in public on July 26, has received foreign visitors in private, including several heads of state during the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement of developing countries in Havana in September.
