Obama expected to extend trade embargo with Cuba
And some DUers are outraged at me for saying that Mr Obama flipped flopped his position on the embargo.

Obama expected to extend trade embargo with Cuba
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/americas/cuba/story/1215215.html
On Sept. 14, the law used to impose the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba will expire unless President Barack Obama signs an extension. Embargo supporters need not worry, however.

All U.S. presidents since the mid-1970s have signed one-year extensions of the Trading with the Enemy Act (TWTEA).

And Obama is expected to do the same because even without it the Helms-Burton law would keep the sanctions in place.

But the fact that Amnesty International on Monday urged Obama to let TWTEA expire underlined the legal maneuvering underway as opponents and supporters of the embargo strategize over the best way to undermine or preserve the U.S. sanctions against the island.

Allowing TWTEA to expire would be ``a gesture without meaning,'' said Washington attorney Robert Muse, considered a top expert on the history and legal structure of the embargo. Adopted in 1917, TWTEA for many years was applied to ``enemy countries'' after a formal U.S. declaration of war, Muse said. In 1963. President John F. Kennedy used TWTEA against Cuba under a declaration of an ``international emergency.''

But in the 1970s, TWTEA was replaced by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. No new sanctions could be imposed under TWTEA, Muse added, but Cuba was grandfathered in. The 1996 Helms-Burton measure essentially turned the embargo into law and set conditions for lifting it that amount to having a democratically elected Cuban government.

1. So even if he doesn't reimpose the embargo, the (Jesse)Helms-(Dan)Burton Act
keeps the embargo in force, anyway.

How the hell did Bill Clinton justify going along with this filthy scheme, anyway, something which supercedes his own powers as the President?

Surely wish President Obama would take the first step needed to begin the process of dismantling this embargo by not signing to continue it. If he doesn't get it done during his Presidency, there is absolutely NO chance it will be possible during any right-wing regime, regardless of the fact there are Republicans favoring retiring the embargo right now.

2. The embargo is big business for the Miami Mafia and it's not worth it to the
Obama administration to piss them off right now. Maybe after a while, or after 2012.

While I blame the US I blame the Cubans in Miami more for allowing the suffering of their own with all of their justifications.

So many of them including Arturo Sandoval have made millions playing the divide.

3. He (Mr Obama) gave the exiles of all stripe a big wet kiss.
A new trend is health care treatment in Cuba. Cuba offers a type of policy for foreigners seeking some kind of coverage in Cuba provided they can get their for treatment.

This means that non Cuban-Americans and non Cuban exiles (the rest of us) are prevented from doing this also.

Result? Masses of exiles and their families are dropping their pricey US coverage and flying to Cuba to get treated there.

They now use US emergency rooms in emergencies, but going uncovered by insurance (leaving the cost to be socialized by the rest of us who are subsidizing it).

They might hate Castro but they LOVE socialism (as long as they aren't taxed for it).

4. Thanks for breaking that story here. It's hideous, but completely credible,
as it's so consistant with their twisted support of the embargo and travel ban.

6. Not to mention that now they can supply the black markets at a substantial profit.
With as many trips as they want.

There have been some posted stories here in the past of exile mules who are paid to travel to Cuba, along with their luggage and packages, with the sole purpose of supplying their black market counterparts in Cuba. This is opportunity provided by the embargo & sanctions that Mr Obama is extending. Another big wet one for the exile cretins seeking to exploit the situation and the poor to satisfy their greed.

7. Do you have more than anecdotal info on the Cubans in Miami using healthcare in Cuba?
Now that is really something... but I'm sure they cover their tracks less for legal reasons, more due to not wanting a propaganda boost for Fidel and Cuba's healthcare successes, especially now with the US battle raging.

Any links or mentions of this would be appreciated.

8. Not yet. Heard this being discussed on exile radio. Deeply divisive topic.

http://www.articlesbase.com/destinations-articles/medical-tourism-in-costa-rica-canada-and-cuba-396305.html
Cuba is one of the oldest healthcare destinations in the world. The doctors, hospitals and technologies used in healthcare treatments are well reputed in the world. Healthcare centers of Cuba are near beaches so mostly patients choose it a healthcare destination. Patients from Europe and Latin America travel to Cuba to receive high quality medical service at lower prices. The hospitals and doctors of Cuba are popular for cancer treatment, addictions rehabilitation, eye surgery, joint replacement and cosmetic surgery. Costs of treatments in Cuba are 60 to 80 percent less than the costs of treatments in US. There are many well equipped hospitals in Cuba not only for local residents but for foreigners too. A documentary film "Sicko" increased the interest of foreigners in the healthcare services of Cuba. The government of Cuba has also taken some steps to attract medical tourists from all over the world to Cuba to increase income. The residents of UK, Bahamas, Canada, , Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and US can travel to Cuba for healthcare purposes on a tourist visa. Due to the trade policy of America toward Cuba patients need approval from the government of US so they visit Cuba as private matter. Some hospitals of Cuba are worldly known for the quality of its services.

Above para of above article from '08 - before the Obama election and subsequent lip lock w/exiles. This "approval" is the wet one Mr Obama gave Cuban-Americans and Cuban resident aliens.
