1. It could have been a day of celebration of the return of democracy to Honduras if...
...the US embassy in Honduras, where embassy officials admitted they knew of the coup beforehand (and "advised against it") had made a phone call to Clinton or Obama, alerting them to the imminence of the coup (or maybe they did), and Obama or Clinton had called the US commanders at the US military base in Honduras and told them that, if the Honduran military stopped there for refueling the plane carrying their kidnapped president into exile, the US military should hold the plane...

or if...

...$43 million in US taxpayer money had not been lavished on the coupsters by John McCain and his "International Republican Institute" via the USAID (Eva Golinger FOIA research), and more multi-millions had not been funneled to the rightwing businessmen behind the coup by Hillary Clinton's "Millennium Corporation" (NarcoNews research), and more multi-millions from US taxpayers had not equipped the Honduran military with the rifles, bullets, armored vehicles, planes, helicopters and other wherewithal to shoot up the president's house, kidnap him at gunpoint, spirit him out of the country, declare martial law, suspend all civil rights, shut down the media and start shooting protesters with live ammunition and arresting thousands of leftist political activists prior to the November election...

or if...Obama/Clinton had not waited months, as the coup entrenched itself, to take any serious measures to pressure them to relinquish power and restore democracy in Honduras, had shut off all funding and all Junta visas and US bank accounts immediately, and had packed up the US military and the US embassy and exited Honduras immediately in concert with the whole frigging rest of the world...

or if...Obama had welcomed President Zelaya to the White House and held a press conference saying that rightwing military coups in Latin America will no longer be supported or tolerated by the US government, and had shaken his hand for the cameras, and sent that photo to Honduras, and had given him full and unconditional support, and had not permitted US officials to snipe at him and delay his return, and had provided Air Force One for his transportation back to Honduras, and had accompanied him on that journey and had told the coupsters to stuff it...

or...

...oh, well, it could have been a great Independence Day for Honduras, and a watershed in US/Latin American relations, changing the conniving, belligerent, fascist-loving bully of the North into a real friend of the people of Honduras and Latin America.

I haven't decided whether or not Obama and Clinton are complicit in this rightwing coup, or some other thing has taken place--possibly a Bushwhack plot that was sprung upon them and they have done the best they could to minimize violence and perhaps saved Zelaya's life and were genuine in establishing the Arias Accord as a means of returning Zelaya to his rightful office, but I have to say that things do not look well for them, as to complicity, and are not particularly good in any reasonable scenario involving this coup. I am under no illusions that it would have been easy to do the right thing, given the state of things in this country with the corpo/fascist media running rampant and the Puke pigs in Congress supporting the coup, and our war profiteers and global corporate overseers seemingly intent on destroying the USA and probably viewing this as part of their oil war plan for South America. And maybe we will one day find out that this was a critical moment in Obama gaining full control of our government, and that the delays in US reactions that have aided this coup could not be helped. More likely, though, we may one day have to face the miserable truth that the US government cannot change its evil ways no matter who we have the illusion that we are electing.
