UPDATE ON TODAY'S OAS MEETING
(Received through the Venezuela Solidarity Network list serve.

Shannon and Negroponte were at this meeting to try to quell the responce and put on the full court press.

Cort

Today is shaping up to be an important day in world politics. The
start of the meeting of the foreign ministers of OAS continues to
remain behind closed doors as strong debates are emerging over what
stance to take regarding Colombias actions in Ecuador.

Telesur is reporting that 8 countries (including Bolivia, Venezuela,
Argentina and Brazil) plus CARICOM are supporting a resolution that
openly condemns Colombia and have essentially stated their position of
complete support for what Ecuador wants.
only three countries have stated their opposition to adding the word
condemn, US, Mexico and Colombia.

OAS resolutions general are based on consensus im not sure if they
have every gone to a vote. But Ecuador's foreign minister has
repeatedly stated in interviews with press being broadcast in
Venezuela that they are willing to take this issue to a vote will all
the implicits this brings with it.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa earlier stated bluntly that if the
OAS meeting did not condemn the aggression, that it should be thrown
"in the dustbin of history".

1. Great! Just saw your article. You can be sure Peru would have been on the U.S. side, too,
had Alan Garcia, in his desperation to be seen as pro-Latin American, not already jumped the gun and condemned Colombia early in the game!

Thanks a lot, magbana. I'm going to be interested in hearing more about this. You may recall some of Latin America has expressed interest in reforming the OAS without the U.S. participating, and forcing its will on the other members.

Seems appropriate.

Thanks.

2. it's strange that Mexico with a tradition on defending the principle of non intervention
will support Colombia.

3. I'll bet it has something to do with Calderon's closeness to Bush.
From now on, once Bush's "Plan Mexico" kicks in, he, too, like Uribe will be seeing Bush both as a giant nipple feeding them boatloads of U.S. taxpayers' hard-earned money, but also as an additional security force to help slaughter political opposition.

From the standpoint of an complete asshole, a politician can't get much higher than that!
