COPENHAGEN (YBH.ME) – Below are some of the more interesting quotes from Hugo Chavez’s 20 minute speech at the U.N. Climate Change conference in Copenhagen today.

Mr. Chavez was warmly received and some of the quotes below received enthusiastic applause from the audience in the hall:

“If the climate was a bank would have already saved it.”

“The destructive model of Capitalism is eradicating life”

“I don’t think Obama is here yet. He got the Nobel Peace Prize almost the same day as he sent 30,000 soldiers to kill innocent people in Afghanistan.

“ not democratic, it is not inclusive, but isn’t that the reality of our world, the world is really and imperial dictatorship…down with imperial dictatorships”

"Let's fight capitalism and make it obey us" is a great line--applicable to a lot of situations!

I'm going to post this as an OP. First I'm going to look for a better article. This article from The Australian is full of snark at the poor countries in the opening paragraphs, and ends with snark. But then there's this...(which also includes snark...)

Then President Chavez brought the house down.

When he said the process in Copenhagen was “not democratic, it is not inclusive, but isn’t that the reality of our world, the world is really and imperial dictatorship…down with imperial dictatorships” he got a rousing round of applause.

When he said there was a “silent and terrible ghost in the room” and that ghost was called capitalism, the applause was deafening.

But then he wound up to his grand conclusion – 20 minutes after his 5 minute speaking time was supposed to have ended and after quoting everyone from Karl Marx to Jesus Christ - “our revolution seeks to help all people…socialism, the other ghost that is probably wandering around this room, that’s the way to save the planet, capitalism is the road to hell....let’s fight against capitalism and make it obey us.” He won a standing ovation.

And the Ethiopian President Meles Zenawi – who made a sensible and considered and detailed proposal about how to get financing to help climate change adaptation and mitigation in poor countries? He was far less enthusiastically received.

Thanks for this, saw it many years ago and had forgotten.

Amazing that what he said in the 1966 movie "His Excellency" would have been so apt today, subbing the Cold War for Climate Change.

Like the part where he address the "Ambassador of Dolaronia" and where he says, "Why do we need cars when we are still walking around barefoot" and "Why do we need tanks and weapons when there are not enough schools." (These ideas were around 44 years ago !!)
