Hector Hugo-Rojo stood just off Washington Avenue after 1 a.m. with his hands in his jacket pockets, as unsure and anxious as he felt after coming to the country from Cuba at the age of 17.

Now 45, Hugo-Rojo came to save the Utah home he and his wife paid $413,000 for in 2005. The couple was earning ``good money'' in the real-estate business, he said, until his wife Karla was diagnosed with cancer during a stay in Mexico.

Then the real-estate bubble popped, and Hugo-Rojo said he hasn't been able to keep a job since. He continues to pay medical bills and his home is in foreclosure. On March 29 he filed for bankruptcy.
