Obama attends Estefans, Arsht Center

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Gloria and Emilio Estefan hosted President Barack Obama at a reception at their Star Island home Thursday, moments before the Commander-in-Chief stopped at another fundraising event for the Democratic National Committee.

The $30,000 per couple cocktail reception raised millions of dollars for the committee. Gloria Estefan wore a white dress and during the event she showed Obama pictures of the recent violent, clashes in Cuba involving family of journalists and dissidents.

Martha Figueredo was outside the event and is pleased with Obama's visit. "I'm so glad President Obama is here. He's a wonderful man and I love Gloria and Emilio," she said. "I think they're great Cuban-Americans and I think this is very positive."

Meanwhile, at Obama's next stop, a group of people who oppose oil drilling off Florida's coastline protested across the street from the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, where the DNC fundraiser was held. "I think he needs a reminder that back in 2008, he promised during his campaign that he wouldn't open up the East Coast drilling off the coast of Florida," said surfrider.org activist, Greg Gordon.

While Cuba was on the agenda at the Estefans, Haiti's continuing struggle after the earthquake and the First Lady were discussed at the Arsht Center. "Took her first solo trip abroad as First Lady, her first stop was to Haiti. The devastation moved her deeply, she also saw though the resiliency and the resolve.

The DNC raised $2.5 million, before the president flew back to D.C. -- all of this took place in less than three hours.

Later that night, Gloria Estefan appeared on Larry King Live to discuss event. "The bottom line is, if the White House calls and says, 'We're coming to Miami, we'd love to do it in your house,' what more of an honor for a Cuban-American immigrant that came here when I was two years old, to have have the President of the United States in my home," she said.

Cuba B.C. baby! Viva Cuba's "glory days". Viva Batista! :puke:

1. Gloria is just like the Damas. Sure her dress is tigher
and cost the combined lifetime income of the entire group, but she is so sincere, and so is Obama.

"Gloria, where are those checks?"

2. And Emilio is no saint either.
He's dodged a few sexual assault charges be settling out of court w/a few of his victims (one of the settlements during the trial, after some rather steamy gym action testimony). Seems he likes rough hombre a hombre sex workouts at the gym. The problem with that is that a few of his partners victims didn't.

5. Dirt on the Estefans, involvement in trafficking with CANF
EE.UU. Campaña contra Cuba también es un negocio
from Cambios en Cuba by M. H. Lagarde

Por Javier Rodriguez Roque

SELECTION IN ENGLISH:
The Estefan was recently accused by a Dominican newspaper to also participate in the lucrative business of illegal traffic of people between Cuba and Mexico and of allying with the National Foundation Cuban-American and the Mexican Cartel of the Gulf in operations of drug trafficking. The prosperous businessman who is Emilio Estefan especially controls the operation of the majority of the Latin artists who appear in Florida and of those who, coming from Cuba, are itself forced to render pleitesía to him and to make declarations against the Island to secure with him a work opportunity.

6. Maybe, when Obama frees Cuba, Emilio will be Cuba's Music Czar.
And Lincon or Mario Diaz Balart will be viceroy.

7. I can see them on CNN all doing the conga with big grins on their faces to celebrate
oooh ... it could happen but probably we'll be spared. They are reviled in Cuba for the most part.

I read an article that said Lincoln wants to be president of Cuba.

4. Can't wait for the day this tightly controlled cluster has finally been dispersed
and isn't able to hang together as a voting block any longer. They need to spread out and either join the country or go back home.

Fortunately there is constant movement of non-Cuban immigrants moving to South Florida, and another generation or so should accomplish what their rigid will would not allow.

I've read in studies this WILL be possible, that other immigrant groups have proven they ALSO become diffused in several generations. It will happen. Can't wait.

It also has been proven that the entire ruling culture of Cuba was transplanted to Florida and remains as rigid and intact as a social reality just as the cultural symbol of the times remains a physical reality, the image of the 1950's car cruising the streets of Havana now, many of them as taxis. I've heard that they even have retained their 1950's mores, expressions, slang, beliefs, all as if in a time capsule.
