2. Bigoted?
Why, because I say they're mired in poverty and hunger? Being poor isn't something you can be bigoted against. It's like being blind, or having a cleft palate, it happens to people and it's usually something they can't control. Cubans are poor because they're forced to live under a communist regime.

You know, you continue with personal attacks, detract from the discussion board's quality.

Edited on Thu May-13-10 07:31 PM by Billy Burnett
I really think that you are bigoted against Cubans. You have not one good thing to say about their accomplishments!

You condemn Cuba without any real experience in Cuba.

Cubans aren't "mired in hunger". You are posting another falsehood by saying so.

WWF includes in its report a graph which shows two features: the human development index (established by the United Nations) and the so-called “ecological footprint” which shows the per person energy and resources comsued in each country.

Surprisingly, only Cuba has passed in both arenas, which is enough to be designated a country that “meets the minimum sensitivity criteria”.

4. ir may meet all those measures, which I suspect are rigged anyway
You see, maybe they meet those measures you like to quote, but I do notice Cubans are very skinny, and the Cubans I've met here tell me they are given a ration card, which is so little, if they were to stick to it they would starve. So Cubans spend all the time roaming around looking for food, and in Cuba there are no stray animals, an no pigeons, they ate them all. I'm sorry, you can keep claiming all that stuff, but I got Cubans here in Venezuela who are sick of that system and tell me the truth about it.

5. Excellent propaganda.
Edited on Thu May-13-10 09:20 PM by Billy Burnett
For the uninitiated and uninformed... the ration card (actually it's a discount coupon book to be used at a government coop store) isn't intended to be the sole source of food purchasing. All Cubans have an income. A living wage/retirement. The so called "ration card" is nothing more than a subsidized coupon book used as an addition to whatever else they are buying.

No stray animals? No pigeons?

My god. You are totally out there in the nothingness of bigotry.

6. Their wages are too low to buy food
This is why so many of them depend on theft and prostitution. The Cubans here tell me they ate all the pigeons and stray animals. I'd rather beleve them than you, sorry.

As another poster here says, you're here to sling bullshit hoping that maybe something will stick. So far, nada.

I do have to say that your form is improving. At least you haven't faked this falsehood into a story snippet. It's pure you.

Mods: how long are you going to allow this bigoted spamming to continue? Not to mention the fake story snippets and fabricated story by-lines, how long would a DUer last here if they continuously posted this and other types of bigoted nonsense of an American demographic?

Can you imagine how long it would take mods to TS a poster who made such claims against African-Americans, or Latinos, or Native Americans, or GLBTs, or women, or men?

A New York minute, I suspect.

Here's to the job the mods do :toast: ... in hopes that they see the light on this matter.

But, like proto and now you, when they get a little heat over their falsehoods and bigotry they too claim "humor" and "satire".

If you all want to post satire and humor then maybe find a satire forum to post your "humor" and "satire"?

Otherwise it's nothing more than flamebait and spam.

19. The problem of prostitution in Cuba is well known
I think the problem Cuba has with prostitution is well known. You may visit blogs written by Canadians and Europeans in which they describe their adventures with young, and very cheap, Cuban prostitutes.

As regards the population eating all the pigeons and stray dogs and cats, I've heard the story from several Cubans, all of them repeat the same line: after the Soviet Union fell, they went hungry, very hungry, because Cuba had not been a self sustaining society, and survived thanks to Soviet subsidies. The lack of subsidies caused a huge crisis, and they nearly starved to death. One of them told me they even had to take old felt blankets, shred them, and mix the cut up threads with an egg to bulk up a meal.

I think the ravages of communism are well known. The North Korean population is known to suffer from mass starvation, and it is reported they have stripped the bark off trees. Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans have died of hunger in recent years. Other major communist crimes are also reported, such as the killing fields in Camboya, where the communists murdered over a million middle class and educated members of society.

I know this makes you mad, but I am just discussing what I hear from Cubans who are talking about their experiences. Do notice I'm not sitting here spitting at you nor insulting you, nor calling for you to be silenced, even though I happen to think you are either deceived or just shilling for the communist regime. Keep it civil, and maybe together we can discern a truth we can both trust.

7. Hey Billy, here's some pooches that have not yet made it into the pot
The claim is so lame that words fail me. So went looking for a few pix. And found the mellow dogs of Cuba. :-)

In some countries, such as Egypt, animals are not treated well. In Cuba I found great respect for dogs, cats, and other animals. The closest thing I saw to a fight was when a driver did not slow down for a dog crossing the road, and a bystander let it be known what the proper behavior should be. Dogs in Cuba are everywhere, and you can usually hear barking, but not the fierce aggressive barking you hear in countries such as South Africa. Most dogs in Cuba are small, and all the street dogs need a bath. But they sleep anywhere, and can be found standing around observing life, or just generally sniffing everything. Here are a few examples of man's (and woman's) best friend.

Several homes had the sign "Hay perro!" This was supposedly to notify potential intruders that a dangerous dog was on the premises. When I would see one of these signs I would shake the gate to see what would happen. Usually, if the dog even woke up, I would get a "why are you bothering me?" look.

8. Oh, yeah! I'll bet you and Billy Burnett may remember the U.S. Interests Section head,
who worked for George W. Bush, Vicki Huddleston, had an Afghan Hound she insisted on using to join the Cuban National Association of Afghan Hounds in Havana. She had named her Afghan "Hassan Havana Huddleston." She made insulting remarks about Cuba there, and the association demanded her membership be terminated, although they agreed the dog could remain connected to the organization.

She also threw a fit when she learned there was a limit on the size of shipments in her diplomatic allotment she could order from the U.S. because she wanted large amounts of supplies for her show dogs.
If they eat the dogs in Cuba, may we inquire "WHAT DOG SHOWS?" :wtf:

How absolutely idiotic ANYONE drags his ass here day after day to lay out all these politically motivated whoppers. We ALL know better than that. ALL of us.

It is rare to find such a large dog in the
City, but this one posed for me and had no
problem with a stranger at the door.

Dogs of Havana
You can’t walk anywhere in Havana without stumbling across the dogs of Havana!

For the most part, the owners keep a close eye on their pets, which tend to hang out in the windows or doorways. There are plenty of stray dogs in the streets as well.

Cubans love their dogs, though it’s not easy to feed them. Since pet food is not for sale in Cuba, owners feed them scraps left over from meals.

http://www.havana-unwrapped.com.nyud.net:8090/images/DogFourAgain.jpg

This is a stray who lives by begging and who
followed me for five blocks. He is probably
the typical Cuban dog which, it is rumored,
“came off the boat with Columbus.”

This pet dachshund displays herself in the window so
passersby can give her an admiring glance or touch.

This little guy seemed to beg me to say hello. Most
dogs in Cuba are on the small side and could be
described as a Heinz 57 variety.

http://www.havana-unwrapped.com.nyud.net:8090/images/DogNineDreams.jpg

Here is another version of “the Columbus dog” and
he was sleeping near one of the noisiest highways
in Havana, right beside the Malecon seawall. Yet
nothing could disturb his dreams.

Above is a little dog owned by a blind man and he is very
proud of his dog. I found them near a bar in Central Havana.

http://www.havana-unwrapped.com.nyud.net:8090/images/DogSixMalecon.jpg

Here (right) is an excellent example of a
boldly mixed breed. No doubt he contains
elements of many of the above dogs but I
could not ask him as he was merrily
making his way through Central Havana to
an undisclosed rendezvous.

Anyone who claims that Cubans eat dogs is a liar. Period.

Although, plenty of people eat Squab, including in the US. Food Network has recipes.

26. I got a Cuban here who says it's dogs, cats, even vultures
Sorry, but they keep assuring me they ate everything when the Soviet Union fell, dogs, cats, vultures. And the one who told me about the shredded blankets with eggs swears it's true. I wouldn't believe it myself, but I've heard some pretty awful stories about the Soviet gulag, and what prisoners of war ate in camps, so I suppose it's true. Maybe we should do an internet search to see what we find, use "Cuban people ate the cats" to see if it has any hits....

27. Here's a comment from yahoo answers about Cubans eating cats
"Cubans do buy food but they don't get the best like we do. One day you go to the supermarket and you buy: milk, bread, snack..etc. but don't get the idea that Cubans can get those foods. Cuba is a very poor country and all the people get everyday at work would be maximum 7 pesos. As you can see it's a very poor country. It's a great country for vacation. Only if it's 4 stars or up. Cubans are everywhere in the streets trying to get money from other tourists. I wouldn't say the eat cats and dogs all the time. They would in times when they NEED to. Now close your eyes and imagine Cuba BEFORE I told you about it. How was it? Luxurious and palm trees everywhere right? It would be like that for tourists. Right now they are need they need our help. They don't like where they are living. It's a horrible place for us. Now close your eyes and imagine YOUR everyday life: waking up with an alarm clock and heading downstairs for breakfast right? of course! but in Cuba you wake up NOT by the sound of an alarm clock and you WOULD NOT head downstairs to have breakfast. You would go to work if you even had one. Cuba has been a rich country. But now they are very poor."

28. And here's an article from a British paper saying they ate the cats
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/millions-of-cubans-facing-starvation-hunger-is-fuelling-an-exodus-of-desperate-refugees-writes-phil-davison-from-havana-1417691.html

Millions of Cubans facing starvation: Hunger is fuelling an exodus of desperate refugees, writes Phil Davison from Havana

PHIL DAVISON in Havana

YOU WON'T see many cats prowling the twisting, unlit streets of old Havana these days. Strays or pets, most have fallen victim to a people living on the edge of starvation.

Under ever-tighter rationing since the collapse of the Soviet bloc, the poorest of Cubans began devouring the cat population last year. Even the tiny allowance of meat in their ration books is rarely available after they queue for hours at state warehouses.

'Cats were among the first to go since they're said to taste okay. I had my three robbed from my house in January,' said Sylvia, a 32-year- old unmarried mother who lives in the Playa district and works as an administrator in a state hospital.

'I've heard of people eating dogs, those little ones that have no fur, but I think that's the exception. They say dog meat tastes bad and you still see plenty of stray dogs. Most people have drawn the line there. So far.'

The hunger of Cuba's 11 million people has reached a critical level. Package tourists from Canada, South America or Europe are kept well away from it as they are whisked from airports to hotels in beach resorts such as Varadero. But Cubans without access to US dollars are starving as badly as their Caribbean neighbours in Haiti, the western hemisphere's poorest nation.

-----------------------

So it says they ate cats, and some even ate dogs. My Cuban friend says he ate a dog, and he also heard of people who caught and ate vultures. All of the Cubans I talked to here said the cats were OK. They also mentioned snakes were no good, they have too many little bones (I think Cuba only has small snakes).

So there you are.

Stray Cats in Cuba!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long story short, I was in Cuba for a week on vacation, and at the hotel I was staying at, there were a lot of strays hanging around.

Mind you, these are of the most well-fed strays I've ever seen, heh. They won't eat anything except meat, and I never saw any visible ribs. Even the kittens I saw were in pretty good health!

Anyway, I figured these pictures would be interesting for everyone to see. On a few occasions my mother and I brought food to the area where most of them hang out, so I got swarmed once or twice.

29. It's not anti-Cuban, Billy, it's anti-communist
Don't confuse the two. I'm sure that, given free and fair elections, the Cubans would kick the communists out of power. Therefore my comments are to be construed as "anti-communist", not "anti-Cuban". Don't forget, Cubans mixed with African slaves, we mixed with native Americans and a little with African slaves, so got a little more oriental DNA in our blood.

For the uninformed, the Native American population came to the Americas from Asia, via Beringia, this has been shown by DNA studies, when they arrived, they exterminated the megafauna which existed in the Americas, once that party was over, the newly arrived homo sapiens went ahead and behaved as it always did, growing the population, cutting trees, sometimes destroying the environment, and always trying to kill the guy next door whenever possible). We are a mixture of European invaders with these earlier migrants, with a tad of African slave mixed in, but we're a lot more laid back :-)

Cubans, on the other hand, have a slightly different background. The Spaniards exterminated all the natives on the island, either via disease transmission or outright genocide, so they decided to import African slaves. The Cuban population thus shows more of a mixed European-African descent. But we're close enough we can play dominoes together, and their music and ours are the same.

As for you white Americans, it would really help if you didn't try to classify people of mixed blood as "black" or "white", it is ridiculous. In any case, you white folk are just mutated Africans, you lost your ability to darken your skin as a survival mechanism, when you were forced to move north by us, the darker skinned southerners. So, as you fled north into the snowy wilderness of the ice age, you had to lighten up to absorb more sun light - imagine how you must have suffered in that cold, you didn't even know how to make a fur coat, and yet you had to survive somehow. Therefore we don't mind your mutated nature, it's not your fault :-)
