Honduran president says plot to overthrow him
Honduran president says plot to overthrow him
The Associated Press
Wednesday, June 9, 2010; 11:18 PM

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- Honduran President Porfirio Lobo warned Wednesday of a purported conspiracy to overthrow him just a year after his predecessor was ousted in a coup.

"I'm warning you that I know who you all are," Lobo said in a statement, referring to alleged coup plotters whom he did not name. "I have information, and you were wrong about me."

Lobo did not offer any further details or proof of a conspiracy.

HRN television reported that three members of the ruling National Party were behind the plan, but did not identify them.

National Party chief Fernando Anduray called Lobo's accusations "imprudent" and urged prosecutors to investigate.

1. A few days ago ...

... and I do not know whether it was reported in the U.S. media, but Loboletti said he was willing to allow Zelaya back into the country. He even offered to go to the Dominican Republic to fetch Zelaya.

This was reported in El Heraldo, the main coup backer newspaper in Tegus. I happened to see it while scanning the Latam media and at the time thought .... hummmm, interesting.

Lobo's offer appears to have seriously pissed off the anti-zelaya gorillas so suspect that is what is behind loboletti's saying the same gorillas might be after his butt too.

hillary might be backing and calling for the recognition of another coupster one of these days ;-)

3.  I'm sure you're right. Lobo has made a strategic move to ingratiate himself
with the victims of the coup, or, rather the survivors, the people themselves. He is learning how much their support has been needed, and has been deeply wounded, if not lost altogether.

The gorilettis of course feel "screw'em," since they believe they have ultimate control of the power, the military, the police, and don't really need anything else, since terror goes a long way in producing the appearance of cooperation. That seems to be their final position.

So Lobo would look weak to them, not simply taking the powerful job they got for him, and continuing the brutal treatment of anyone who dares to dissent. He would also seem to be contradicting their right to forcibly remove Zelaya and install their own man, by making gestures he hopes will win the approval of the people.

This would not be acceptable to them, would it?

4. Thank you so much for this link. Great to get this information blast from Honduras.
It almost seems to be the other side of the world, right now, due to the isolation of the people, all under the gun of the coup and the coup-designated President (for the time being, clearly!).

So good hearing what's going on. Thank you.

Honduran president warns of new coup plot
By the CNN Wire Staff
June 9, 2010 2:19 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Less than a year after his predecessor was removed from power in a military-led coup, Honduran President Porfirio Lobo says he has found out that some political opponents want to overthrow him, a statement from the president's office reported.

Lobo said Tuesday he knew the names of those who are plotting against him and warned them not to try a coup.

Asked by reporters if he is behind a movement to replace the Supreme Court president, Lobo said, "It's the president of the republic they want to get rid of. But they're going to tangle with me. Never should we forget that for every action there's a reaction. I tell you, we have everything well tracked. We have located all of them. I know who they are. I have all the information, and I believe they have made a mistake with me."

Former President Jose Manuel Zelaya was overthrown in a military-led coup June 28 and flown into exile. He snuck back into Honduras in September and obtained refuge in the Brazilian Embassy, where he remained until Lobo took office in January.
