U.S. has sent a diplomatic note to Venezuela re Posada Carriles
Edited on Wed Jul-07-10 11:30 PM by rabs

(Edit to correct Posada Carriles name)

The announcement was made this morning by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro who was at the airport when Salvadoran terrorist was hustled into a plane and extradited to Cuba.

Maduro did not reveal the contents of the note but said the government was analyzing it. He also did not say whether the note was received before or after the capture of Chavez Abarca last week.

But from his announcement, it does not look promising that Posada Carriles will be arrested and extradited.

Key graphs, my translation:

"The government of the United States recently handed us for the first time in five years a diplomatic note, which we are evaluating, in response to the permanent request for the extradition of the head of the terrorists, of the bin Laden of this hemisphere, Luis Posada Carriles ..."

-----------------------
Maduro also said that the U.S. always looks for legal excuses to not carry out the capture and extradition of the terrorist Carriles.

En la extradición, Maduro también expresó que EE.UU. siempre busca excusas legales para no realizar la captura y extradición del terrorista Posada Carriles.

----------------------------
"They attempt to hide with pettifogging roadblocks (vericuetos leguleyas), with pettifoggery excuses, (that which) the entire world does not understand: (why) the government of (Obama) has not made the decision to capture Posada Carriles ..."

''Tratan de esconder en vericuetos leguleyos, en excusas leguleyas, lo que el mundo entero no entiende: que el gobierno de (el presidente Barack) Obama no haya tomado la decisión de capturar a Posada Carriles", indicó.

As far as I know, there is no English equivalent of "vericuetos leguleyas" so had to look up both words. It is the first time that I have ever written "pettifogging" and "pettifoggery."

1. English version from Venezuelan Embassy in D.C.

---------------

"legalese excuses" = "vericuetos leguleyas"

Looks like they too were stumpted on how to translate those two words.

2. Did they catch the Salvadoran responsible for bombing a hotel in Havana in the 90s?
He killed an Italian tourist.

3. Yes, Raul Ernesto Cruz Leon -- also a Salvadoran

CUBAN COURT SENTENCES SALVADORAN TO DEATH IN TERRORIST BOMBING CASE.
Publication: NotiCen: Central American & Caribbean Affairs
Date: Thursday, March 25 1999

A Havana court sentenced a Salvadoran national to death for setting off bombs in various Cuban tourist sites in 1997. Prosecutors revealed that others had been arrested in the bombing campaign and produced a witness who testified that he was hired by a Miami-based exile organization to carry out terrorist acts in Cuba.

Raul Ernesto Cruz Leon was arrested September 1997 after a series of bombings threatened to dampen the booming Cuban tourist economy (see EcoCentral, 1997-190-02).

The explosives set by Cruz Leon injured 11 people and killed Fabio di Celmo, an Italian-Canadian businessman (see EcoCentral, 1997-08-21). The sentence will be automatically appealed to the Supreme Court.

Don't know if Cruz Leon was executed but suspect not, else it would have been world-wide news.

5. I think we would have heard if Cruz Leon had been executed.
Even with all the capital offense killings we do here, you can be sure they would have chewed the scenery over Cuba's education of a hired terrorist who was trying to blow up a large buidig filled with people. Twice!

4. Thanks for this post! Washington DC is infested with pettifogging lawyers
who can think up a thousand lies, I'm sure, for why the U.S. should protect its own terrorist.

Pettifogging always makes me think of Charles Dickens' novel, "Bleak House"--a story about several young people whose lives are ruined by a pettifogging lawsuit that has gone on for decades, as they typically did in the Inns of Court.* Dickens starts off the novel with a description of the fog creeping in and round the Inns of Court, fogging up issues of justice and decency--a wearying, menacing fog that infects people with depression, mania, pettiness and volumes of trivial, meaningless paper.

I think of Washington DC as a Great Fog. Whoever enters that dreary, mind-numbing, billowing fog is never the same again. They are eaten up by the The Fog. Their brains are rotted by The Fog. Their souls are made wispy and evaporated by The Fog. Clearly, this Fog infected Barack Obama with a strange mania for "free trade" with Colombia. Can't he SEE that he would be "free trading" with narco-thugs who KILL union leaders and others? No, he can't see for The Fog. I was first alerted to his condition when he said, of prosecuting Bush, Cheney & Rumsfeld, et al, that, "We need to look forward not backward." Harvard Law School, and he couldn't come up with a better line than that? I mean, tell that to some petty criminal in a U.S. dungeon, um, jail for possessing a bit of weed. Did they not LOOK BACKWARD to the day that he got stopped for a traffic violation and Officer Krumke searched his pockets and found two joints? Was that PAST EVENT not spoken of in court? The law ALWAYS deals with THE PAST--what happened, not what may happen in the future. Barack.

It's The Fog. And then there's the PettiFog--all the people whose minds are full of Fog who write the laws, or let their corporate Fog Buddies write the laws, and all the petty functionaries who disappear the HUGE CRIMES of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others INTO The Fog, but make it a federal offense for some ordinary Jane or Joe NOT to pay some multinational corporation for health insurance.

Like a ghostly snake curling its way in and out of all the corridors of power "inside the Beltway," where they have totally forgotten what sunshine even looks like. Sucking the life out of our leaders, sucking their brains out, filling their heads with the Poisonous Fog of legalised torture and murder for the Powerful, and poverty and tyranny for everyone else.

So tragic that, having declared our independence from the British Empire, we have BECOME the British Empire Writ Large by yet more ambitious PETTIFOGGERS.

*(Kind of like that lawsuit of the Indigenous against Chevron-Texaco in Ecuador, which has gone on for more than a decade, while children drink and bathe in the toxic sludge that Chevron-Texaco left in the Amazon, in an area the size of Rhode Island. Or the people still waiting for Exxon Mobil to pay damages for the Exxon-Valdez spill. Or like the poor fisherfolk and tourism workers who will likely be waiting for decades, as the suits against BP wind through The Fog.)
