Venezuelan Communists Call for Regional Demilitarization

Caracas, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela''s Communist Party blames the war-mongering and divisive positions of some countries of the continent for the military bases set up in their territories and proposed that the area be declared a demilitarized zone.

Solutions to the stability of the region require Latin America and the Caribbean to be a zone free of foreign troops and bases, said the Politburo member of the organization Carlos Aquino.

Aquino made clear that he was referring not only to U.S. forces in Colombia, Peru and Panama, but also to the British presence in the Falkland Islands, the French in Guiana, and the Dutch in the Caribbean islands.

According to him, those elements of the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty in the region are against peace and the integration of Latin American and Caribbean peoples.
